LOS ANGELES - The Arizona State University women's tennis team (11-7) opened the first round of the NCAA Championships with a 4-0 shutout over San Diego State (16-11) on Friday morning at the Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern California. The Sun Devils won the doubles point and picked up three singles points, all in straight sets, to advance to Saturday's 1:00 p.m. second-round dual against the winner of USC/Illinois-Chicago.
In doubles action, ASU earned the first point of the dual by winning two of the three matches on courts No. 2 and 3. The Sun Devils No. 2 team of Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch came off first with a quick 8-2 victory over SDSU's Alesya Vidov and Eliska Krausova. The pair improved their team-leading dual record to 12-4 on the year. ASU won the point on the No. 3 court where Joslynn Burkett and Rebecca Rankin defeated Nina Spaeth and Sisse Nielson, 8-4.
In singles action, the Devils took command of the dual early on as they secured two more quick points to extend their lead to 3-0. On the No. 1 court, 46th-ranked Capannolo dispatched Vidov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, while Rankin soon followed with another straight sets victory on the No. 6 court over Nielson, 6-2, 6-1.
ASU clinched the dual on the No. 3 court where Kady Pooler continued her stellar singles play with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Krausova. Pooler is now 9-2 at the No. 3 slot and 15-3 overall in dual play.
