Stahle Named Golf World College Player of the Week

April 7, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University freshman Louise Stahle has been named the Golf World Women's College Player of the Week in its April 1 edition.

The Sun Devils are ranked eighth in the latest Golf World Women's College Coaches Poll. Duke continues to hold the top spot in that poll, which is voted on by 17 college coaches, while rounding out the top 10 are (2) UCLA; (3) Auburn; (4) Georgia; (5) Washington; (6) Pepperdine; (7) Oklahoma State; (8) ASU; (9) Wake Forest; (10) Ohio State.

ASU is also ranked fifth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, while Stahle is No. 1, sophomore Tiffany Tavee is ranked 32nd and junior Alissa Kuckza is 50th in that poll.

The top-ranked collegiate player in the country, Stahle won her second tournament of the season last week, capturing a three-stroke victory over UCLA's Amie Cochran in the PING/ASU Invitational at Karsten Golf Course. She helped the Sun Devils claim the team trophy in their own event for the first time since 1999, carding a seven-under 209 with three sub-par rounds (70-68-71). ASU captured its third tournament victory of the season, winning the tiebreaker over UCLA.

Originally from Lund, Sweden, Stahle has finished in the top five in five events this season. She turned in runner-up finishes in each of her first three tournaments this fall and won the first event of her Sun Devil career at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson on February. She is the first Sun Devil to be ranked No. 1 in the country since All-American Miriam Nagl in 2000.

Stahle, who holds the nation's lowest stroke average at 71.57, earned an exemption to play in the LPGA Safeway International last month and is the reigning Ladies British Open Amateur champion. In October, she played for the winning Swedish team at World Amateur Team Championship.

The Sun Devils return to action April 18-20 when the team travels to the Ruby Hill Golf Course in Pleasanton, Calif., for the 2005 Pac-10 Conference Championships. ASU looks to win its 10th league crown and its first since 1996.
