2004-05 Women's Basketball Awards

April 20, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Sun Devil women's basketball team handed out individual awards at ASU's annual season-end banquet Tuesday night at the Tempe Mission Palms.

Arizona State University student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans celebrated the 2004-05 season in which the Sun Devils turned in a 24-10 record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time in 22 years. ASU finished the season ranked 16th in the country in the final ESPN/USA Today/WBCA coaches' poll and finished one victory short of the school record for single-season wins. The Sun Devils tied for second in the Pac-10 standings and matched their school mark for conference wins with a 12-6 record.

Ninth-year head coach Charli Turner Thorne became the all-time winningest coach in school history and is the first Sun Devil mentor to lead her teams to three NCAA Tournament appearances as well as five consecutive winning seasons. She has compiled a 147-122 record in her nine years in Tempe, including a school-record six straight postseason appearances and three 20-win seasons.

Two Sun Devils earned All-Pac-10 Conference honors, including first-team selection Emily Westerberg. Westerberg became the ninth Sun Devil and just the second sophomore in school history to earn first-team all-conference accolades. Junior Kristen Kovesdy was also named to the honorable-mention All-Pac-10 squad for the second consecutive season.

Arizona State had a school-record six Sun Devils named to the Pac-10 All-Academic teams for the second consecutive season. Sophomore Aubree Johnson was a second-team all-academic honoree, while seniors Carrie Buckner, Kylan Loney and Lauren Stagg, sophomore Emily Westerberg and redshirt freshman guard Jacquelyn Johnson all garnered honorable mention.

ASU also honored its four seniors - Betsy Boardman, Carrie Buckner, Kylan Loney and Lauren Stagg - who helped the team to an 82-45 record and four postseason appearances, including NCAA invitations in 2002 and 2005, over the last four seasons.

The Sun Devils will return three starters and a total of seven letterwinners next season in addition to regaining the services of guard Jill Noe, a 2003 Pac-10 All-Freshman selection who has missed the last two seasons with ACL injuries.
