Junior quarterback Sam Keller completed 18 of 27 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown and senior wide receiver Derek Hagan caught four passes for 49 yards in a controlled scrimmage Saturday in the final workout of the spring at Sun Devil Stadium/Frank Kush Field. Keller threw one interception. Due to numerous injuries to key players on the squad, score was not kept.
Backup quarterback Rudy Carpenter, a redshirt freshman, completed eight of 15 passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns. He threw one interception. Other standouts included junior tight end Jamaal Lewis, who snared four passes for 40 yards and scores of one and 12 yards. Graduate wide receiver/quarterback/running back/holder Chad Christensen caught three passes for 91 yards, including catches of 42 and 43 yards. Ten different receivers caught passes.
Defensively, sophomore safety Rodney Cox returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown. Sophomore cornerback Littrele Jones blocked a punt. Linebackers Jamar Williams and Dale Robinson also looked good.
Transfer Aaron Lafitte led all rushers with seven carries for 54 yards. Rudy Burgess had six carries for 30 yards while redshirt freshman Price Wilks carried seven times for 20 yards and two touchdowns. Antone Saulsberry had two carries for six yards before he injured a hamstring.
Others with receiving statistics were tight end Lee Burghgraef with three catches for 14 yards, Wilks with two receptions for 13 yards, redshirt freshman Mike Jones with one catch for five yards, Terry Richardson with two catches for 31 yards and a score and Jeff Gray with two for 13 yards.
ASU begins the 2005 season Thursday, Sept. 1 by hosting Temple University at 7 p.m. MT at Sun Devil Stadium/Frank Kush Field.
