This Week -- Arizona State University's gymnastics team prepares for the 2005 Pacific-10 Conference championships on Saturday, March 26, beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT in the Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. ASU is coming off it's best meet of the year, scoring a season-high 196.6 versus No. 2 Utah in Salt Lake City last Friday. The Sun Devils, who edged back into this week's poll (based upon regional qualifying score) at No. 25, are coached by veteran mentor John Spini, who is in his 25th season at ASU. He is ASU's longest-tenured head coach, tying former men's basketball coach Ned Wulk (25) and men's gymnastics coach Don Robinson (25) for third on the all-time Sun Devil list. The Sun Devils feature one senior in Mesa, Ariz. product Kari Muth, defending national balance beam champion Ashley Kelly (Jr., York, Pa.) and junior Lauren Powell (Feeding Hills, Mass.). ASU tied for fourth at the 2004 Pac-10 Conference Championships with Arizona (196.775). Stanford won the meet, scoring 197.9. UCLA was second (197.875).
ASU In The Rankings -- ASU debuted at No. 9 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released Jan. 3. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the NCAA crown with 608 votes and 15 first-place bids. ASU received 387 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 3 Stanford (554), No. 12 Oregon State (280) and No. 13 Arizona (264). Washington (21st, 117) and California (25th, 86) rounded out the list of Pac-10 teams in the Top-25. ASU moved back into the national poll this week at No. 25 while UCLA is 3rd, Oregon State No. 12, , Arizona No. 19 and Washington No. 23. For info access http://www.troester.com/gym/.
ASU Faces Nation's Finest -- Arizona State faced eight of the nation's Top 25 teams in 2005, according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils met in 2005, UCLA was No. 1, Stanford was No. 3, Utah was No. 5, Oregon State was No. 12, Arizona was No. 13, Penn State was No. 19, Washington was No. 21 and California was No. 25 in the preseason coaches poll. Four of those meetings were at home in Wells Fargo Arena.
Spini Notches 300th Career Victory, And More -- 25th-year head coach John Spini notched his 300th career victory in the season opener at the Maui Invitational. ASU defeated Maryland, Boise State and Alaska-Anchorage as Spini garnered his 300th, 301st and 302nd career victories. Spini entered the 2005 campaign with 299 career wins. His regular-season record is now 305-117-2 over 24-plus seasons. His won-loss mark at home is 163-25-1.
2005 Results -- 3/18/05: Utah--ASU scored a 196.6 in a loss at Utah, its best team score (and road score) of the campaign. Sophomore Cassandra Jusino was consistent, scoring a season-high 39.3, placing sixth. Fellow sophomore April Boone tied for third on vault (9.9, tying a career-high) and floor (9.925, season-high) and was fourth in the all-around (39.4). All-American Ashley Kelly, suffering from a foot injury, competed in only two events and finished second (9.95) on beam. Freshman Josie Hancock established a career-high (9.85) on vault and a career-best 9.875 on floor. ASU scored a 49 or above in all four events for the first time in 2005. In fact, ASU had not scored a 49 or above in more than two events in any meet in `05. 3/12/05: Minnesota--Junior Ashley Kelly won her 15th career all-around title with a score of 39.375 at No. 19 Minnesota, but ASU lost 195.325-195. Kelly won on beam (9.95) and tied for third on floor (9.8). She finished fourth on vault (9.8) and bars (9.825). April Boone tied for first on vault (9.85) and won on bars (9.9) in her best meet of the season. She was second on beam (9.9). Cassandra Jusino placed second on floor (9.825). ASU's beam score of 49.325 was its best of the season. ASU lost the meet on floor, where it scored a 47.925, its second-lowest mark of the year.
3/4/05 : Penn State--Sophomore Cassandra Jusino won the all-around competition, scoring 39.25, but ASU lost to Penn State, 195.55-194.35. Ashley Kelly (39.025) was third. Kelly tied for first on vault (9.875) and placed second on bars (9.9). Kelly won the floor (9.9). Jusino was consistent, placing third on beam (9.775) while tying for third on bars (9.825) and vault (9.825). 2/25/05: at Stanford --Sophomore Cassandra Jusino placed second in the all-around competition with a 38.95. She tied for third on floor (9.8) and vault (9.775). Ashley Kelly placed second on floor (9.85). Junior Lauren Powell was second on balance beam (9.75). ASU posted its lowest team score of the season (191.575). ASU scored season-lows on vault (47.4) and on beam (47.675). 2/18/05: UNO's Classic --Ashley Kelly won two events en route to her 14th career all-around title. Kelly won vault (9.825) and bars (9.95) in posting a 39.275 total. Sophomore April Boone tied for first in the floor exercise (9.875) with Cassandra Jusino while Kari Muth was ASU's highest finisher on beam (9.775, 2nd). Boone placed second in the all-around while Jusino was third (39.025). 2/11/05: California --Ashley Kelly won all four events en route to her 13th career all-around title (39.575) and helped ASU to a 195.55-181.5 win over California, its first Pac-10 win of the season. Kelly won vault (9.85), bars (9.9), floor (9.925) and tied for first on beam (9.9). Kari Muth shared honors with Kelly on beam (9.9). Cassandra Jusino was second (39.175) in the all-around. April Boone tied for second on vault (9.8) and was second on floor with a season-high (9.85). Lauren Powell, competing on bars only due to a foot injury, tied for second (9.875) on uneven bars. Lisa Lanza tied for third on floor (9.825) with a career-high. 2/4/05: At Oregon State --ASU lost its fourth consecutive meet to OSU, 194.3-193.325 in Corvallis. Cassandra Jusino won the all-around title with a 39.25. She tied for second on bars with a a season-high 9.825. She was second on floor (9.85), fourth (9.775) on vault and tied for third on beam (9.8). Ashley Kelly won three events -- bars (9.85), beam (9.85) and vault (9.9). April Boone tied for third on beam (9.8). 1/28/05: UCLA --Ashley Kelly won two events, tying for first on beam (9.925) and winning bars (9.925) versus UCLA. Cassandra Jusino was third in the all-around with a 39.225. Jusino was second on floor (9.9) and tied for third on vault (9.825). Junior Lauren Powell was injured (ankle) on vault and did not return during the meet. 1/21/05: At Arizona -- Ashley Kelly won the 12th all-around title of her brilliant career, posting a 39.25 in a loss to Arizona (193.925-193.5). Kelly tied for 1st on vault (9.825) and on bars (9.825) with UA gymnasts. She tied for 3rd on floor (9.75) and was 2nd on beam (9.85). Lauren Powell placed 2nd (38.8) in the all-around. April Boone was 4th (9.675) on vault while Powell was 3rd (9.775) on bars. Boone tied for 3rd (9.75) on floor with Kelly. The Sun Devils team score of 48.025 on vault was a season-low. 1/14/05: Washington -- Ashley Kelly won the all-around competition with a 39.425, but ASU lost to UW, 193.05-192.75. Fatigued after returning from Hawaii, ASU suffered several falls, counting them on vault, beam and floor. Cassandra Jusino tied for 1st on bars (9.825) and won floor (9.875) while Kelly won beam (9.925) and vault (9.875). Kari Muth placed 3rd (38.225) in the all-around. 1/7/05: Maui Invitational -- Lauren Powell won the all-around title (39.375) in her first career attempt and coach John Spini won his 300th, 301st and 302nd career meets as ASU (195.7) swept the Maui Invitational field, Maryland (193.975), Alaska-Anchorage (191.275) and Boise State (190.9). Powell won vault (9.9, tying a career-high), tied for 2nd on beam (9.875) and tied for 3rd on bars (9.825). Ashley Kelly was second (38.975) in the all-around after falling on bars. Kelly won beam (9.925) and floor (9.975). Cassandra Jusino placed 3rd (38.85) in the all-
around, tying for 3rd on vault (9.825). She took 2nd on floor (9.95), tying a career-high. April Boone won the first event of her ASU career with a 9.85 on bars. She tied for 1st with BSU's Lindsay Ward.
ASU In The National Rankings -- The Sun Devils are ranked 25th in the 12th poll of the 2005 season. ASU is 12th on bars (48.965), 17th on balance beam (48.88) and 24th (48.557) on the floor exercise. Kelly is 24th (39.26) in the all-around, 3rd on beam (9.925) and tied for 15th on bars (9.875).
