Sun Devil Chez Reavie Finishes Open Appearance With Notable Feat

June 21, 2004

Sun Devil Chez Reavie, a three-time All-American at Arizona State who finished his eligibility this past season, made the cut at the U.S. Open and shot a 24-over 304, but he did something that very few could over the weekend. Reavie birdied the incredibly tough No. 7 on Saturday, one the toughest holes in U.S. Open history. Only 20 birdies were recorded at No. 7 over the weekend, and Reavie was the only player to birdie it Saturday.

Only three of the last 22 players hit the green in regulation on Saturday. In that third round, just 26 percent hit the green in regulation and there were three double-bogeys and 27 bogeys.

Sun Devil Phil Mickelson finished second with a 2-under 278 and pocketed $675,000, while fellow Sun Devils Pat Perez at 17-over 297 ($30,671) and Billy Mayfair shot 30-over 310 ($15,089).
