The test of playing 36 holes in the Arizona sunshine proved to be too much as play was suspended due to darkness Monday during the second round of the 2004 Pacific-10 Conference Men's Golf Championships at The Gallery at Dove Mountain.
Play was suspended at 7:15 p.m. PDT during the day's second 18 holes. Tournament action will resume at 7 a.m. with the conclusion of the second round. Once the second round is complete, the teams will be re-paired for the start of the third round at 8:30 a.m.
Four teams, covering a total of seven players, have as many as two holes to play to complete the second round. Of the teams in the clubhouse, Arizona and Arizona State share the lead at even-par 360 through 36 holes. Both teams tallied a three-over 363 during the event's second round. The individual co-leaders with 36 holes complete are Arizona's Henry Liaw and Chris Nallen, who each tallied a two-round total of 139 (-5).
Tournament-host Arizona and Arizona State got off to good starts in the morning 18, as each carded three-under 357 totals in the opening round to grab a share of the lead. The Wildcats and Sun Devils were the only teams in the field of 10 to post an under-par total in the first 18 holes. Based on the completed first round results, Washington (365), Oregon (368) and UCLA (371) rounded out the top five places.
"Solid is the word I'd use to describe us today," said Arizona State head coach Randy Lein, who has led ASU to seven Pac-10 titles. "We played great golf on a difficult golf course. But we are used to desert golf and the surroundings."
"I came out really well today," said Chez Reavie. "My putting was pretty bad, but other than that I had no mistakes."
"The back nine was the most difficult for me. Like I said, my putter just wasn't working. It was all about the putting today, and that wasn't working for me."
The Gallery proved to be a challenging test for some of the elite players of college golf, as just 15 players shot par or better in the opening round. Washington's Brock Mackenzie posted the best round of the day with an opening-round 67 (-5) to hold a two-shot lead over the field of 60. Liaw, Washington's Dan Potter and Arizona State's Chez Reavie were each tied for second place at three-under 69.
The Pac-10 Championships run through Wednesday at The Gallery at Dove Mountain, a par 72, 7,435-yard layout. The conference championship is determined by teams of six players with the low five scores for each round counting toward the team total.
