ASU's Chez Reavie tied for 16th on June 4 at the U.S. Open sectional qualifying event held at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., and will take part in next week's U.S. Open at Olympia Fields outside of Chicago. Reavie was the first-day leader with a 63 and then shot a 74 to advance.
The 2001 Public Links Champion who played in the 2002 Masters, Reavie earned honorable mention All-America honors in both 2001 and 2003 for the Sun Devils. He posted a ninth-place finish at this year's NCAA Championship and tied for fourth in 2001.
Reavie, a Mesa (Ariz.) Dobson High School graduate who will be a senior next year, posted a 72.05 stroke average this year in 13 events, including nine top-10 finishes. He has 14 top-10 finishes in 29 career events and has a 72.51 career stroke average.
Former Sun Devil Dan Forsman, who earned second-team All-American and was the Pac-10 co-Player of the Year in 1981 and earned third-team All-America honors in 1980, also qualified.
It was a soggy end to U.S. Open qualifying, which featured several PGA Tour players who had to endure water-logged fairways at Woodmont Country Club and a 36-hole test that required two days.
More than 750 players competed for 83 spots during the three days of sectional qualifying.
The 156-man field was set with the final qualifier at Woodmont, although it wasn't a clean finish. Heavy rains delayed the 36-hole qualifier to Wednesday.
Bill Haas, a junior at Wake Forest, finished at 9-under 133 to share the top spot with Rod Pampling and Hidemichi Tanaka.
Others who qualified at Woodmont were Joey Sindelar, Olin Browne, Joe Durant, Jonathan Byrd, former Masters champion Larry Mize and Neal Lancaster, who twice set the nine-hole record at a U.S. Open with 29.
Among those who failed to qualify were former PGA champion Steve Elkington, Jean Van de Velde and Hank Kuehne, whose brother, Trip, qualified earlier this week in Texas.
Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton opened with 71, but withdrew with seven holes to play citing the wet conditions. John Daly also withdrew.
Luke Donald, former PGA champion Mark Brooks and Robert Gamez were among the alternates after finishing at 139. The top 31 players, including ties, advanced.
