Aguilera Garners Spot on Verizon Academic All-America Second Team

June 19, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. - Lisa Aguilera (Sr., Peoria, Ariz.), a member of the Arizona State track and field team, has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Track and Field and Cross Country Second Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. The academic honor is the second in as many days for Aguilera as she was selected to the Pac-10 Conference's All-Academic First Team for track and field one day earlier.

The Verizon honor is the third in Aguilera's storied career in Tempe and her seventh national academic award while competing for the Sun Devil track and field and cross country teams. Aguilera was named to the Verizon second team in 2001 and its first team in 2000 while the United States Track Coaches Association selected her four times (2001, 2000, 1999 and 1998) to its All-Academic squad for cross country. She also is a five-time conference selection and ASU Maroon and Gold Scholar-Athlete.

Aguilera completed her collegiate eligibility last weekend at the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., where she placed fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase. Prior to the meet, Aguilera won the inaugural steeplechase event at the NCAA West Region Championships as well as capturing her second Pac-10 title. With her finish at the national meet, she earned her third outdoor All-America honor and brought her career total to eight including three accolades during her indoor career and two with the cross country team. Here cross country awards makes her ASU's only female to earn All-America honors twice.
