June 10, 2003 - ASU golfer and 2003 NCAA champion Alejandro Canizares tied for seventh place at the Sunnehanna Amateur to begin his summer schedule. Canizares shot rounds of 68-71-74-68 to finish with a 1-over par 281 at the Johnstown, Pa. course.
Canizares is coming off a school season in which he won the Arnold Palmer Award, the Pride/Softspikes Freshman of the Year and was named to both the PING All-America Team and the Softspikes All-Freshmen Team.
He led the Sun Devils with an average score of 71.65, had three top-five finishes, nine top-ten finishes and won the NCAA Championship.
For his first round, Canizares was paired with the tournament's defending champion, Dillard Pruitt.
"I had a good time playing with Alejandro," Pruitt said. "I actually played with his father out on the PGA European Tour so I thought that was kind of neat."
Canizares is to play for the European Palmer Cup team in Kiawah Island, S.C. on July 7-11.
