TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State track and field senior Lisa Aguilera (Peoria, Ariz.) has been selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. The honor marks the third year in a row Aguilera has earned first team all-district accolades and is now eligible for Academic All-America honors to be announced at the end of the season.
Academic success has been a large part of Aguilera's career. In addition to three years in a row of being an all-district first team selection, Aguilera has earned a spot on the First Team All-America list for cross country twice (2000 and 2002) and on the third-team for track and field twice (2001 and 2002). A three-time ASU Maroon and Gold Scholar-Athlete, Aguilera has earned First Team Academic All-Pac-10 honors three times and was a second team member twice.
The 2000-01 ASU Athlete of the Year, Aguilera holds the school record in the steeplechase as well as the 5,000m run. Prior to winning her second steeplechase title in as many years at the Pac-10 Championships, Aguilera also earned All-America honors in the 3,000m indoor race.
The Sun Devil senior was one of four Pac-10 student-athletes on the district's first team joining Washington State's Whitney Evans and Ellanee Richardson and Oregon's Roslyn Lundeen.
Aguilera and her Sun Devil teammates will compete this weekend at the 2003 NCAA West Region Championships, May 30-31, at Stanford.
