WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Led by senior Blair O'Neal, the Arizona State women's golf team is tied for 14th after Tuesday's first round at the NCAA Championships, being held May 20-23 on the par 72, 6,225-yard Kampen Course at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
O'Neal turned in the low round of the day for the Sun Devils on Tuesday, carding a four-over par 76 to move into a tie for 10th after the first round. ASU shot a 32-over 320 and is in a three-way tie for 14th with Georgia and Nebraska after the first day of play. USC leads the tournament after carding a 17-over 305 on Tuesday followed by Oklahoma State (308), Ohio State (309), Florida (313) and UCLA (314). The Sun Devils stand just 15 strokes off USC's lead and three strokes out of 10th place after Tuesday's first round.
Other Sun Devils include sophomore Erin Tone who is tied for 36th after shooting a seven-over 79 on Tuesday, and senior Ga?lle Truet who is tied for 47th with an 80 in the first round. Senior Melanie Hunt is tied for 102nd (85), and freshman Alissa Kuczka is tied for 124th (93).
Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn, the defending NCAA individual champion, and Oklahoma State's Annie Thurman are tied for first after carding even-par 72s on Tuesday.
The NCAA Championships continue Wednesday through Friday with 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. Central Daylight Time (6 a.m. Arizona Time) from No. 1 and No. 10 tees each day. Arizona State tees off hole No. 10 at 12:10 p.m. CDT (10:10 a.m. Arizona Time) on Wednesday, while tee times for the final two rounds will be based on results. The top four scores from each five-person team will count toward the team score.
