TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State freshman outfielder Travis Buck has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and Stanford freshman lefty Mark Romanczuk has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 24-30, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Buck, from Richland, Wash., went 8-for-11 (.727) with three RBI in the three-game series at USC over the weekend. Buck recorded multi-hit games in each contest at Dedeaux Field, going 2-for-4 in the opener, 3-for-3 in the second game and 3-for-4 with an RBI in the finale as ASU clinched the series victory with a 7-5 win. He also had a crucial outfield assist on Sun., March 30 that cut down the would-be tying run in the eighth inning. For the season, Buck is hitting .394 (54-for-137) with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 29 RBI.
Romanczuk, from Newark, Del., threw his first career complete game in a 4-2 win at then No. 3 Arizona State in the rubber game of a three-game series in Tempe, on Mon., March 24. Romanczuk gave up just five hits and two runs, while striking out five Sun Devil batters. In 36.2 innings pitched in 2003, the Cardinal pitcher has a 4.42 ERA and 31 strikeouts, good enough to rank second on the team.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Buck this season and the 68h selection all-time for Arizona State. The Pitcher of the Week is the first such honor for Romanczuk, the 62nd Cardinal to earn the weekly recognition.
