LOS ANGELES - The eigth-ranked Arizona State Women's Tennis Team were unable to step up to defeat No. 3 USC in California Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium, as they suffered a 6-1 loss.
The loss will give the Sun Devils a 7-4 record overall and a 1-1 record in conference play, as USC improves to 16-1 overall this season.
Even though USC came out strong and USC's Carine Vermeulen and Melissa Esmero took a 8-3 victory over Megan Yeats and Joslyn Burkett, the matches at courts one and two were not easily decided.
Adria Engel and Lauren Colalillo played an excellent match, but were just unable to clinch the win, as they fell 9-7.
USC seemed to carry their momentum into singles play, as they took five of the six singles matches.
Though the Devils never showed resignation, as 3 of the six singles matches were played into three sets.
Senior Mhairi Brown was the lone Devil to walk away with a victory on Friday as she competed against #84 Maureen Diaz in a fierce match, which ended in a 6-7, 6-3, 15-13, well-earned victory for Brown.
The Devils are back in action Saturday afternoon as they hope to bounce back from the loss when they take on the No. 12 Bruins of UCLA (10-5) as they continue their season and Pac-10 play.
The match will be held in California and is schedueled to begin at noon.
