TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State shortstop Dustin Pedroia was named to the annual Baseball America Freshman All-America team as a second-team selection Tuesday when the team was announced from the publications headquarters in Durham, N.C.
Pedroia, a freshman from Woodland, Calif., was the only Sun Devil to start and play in all 58 games for the Sun Devils in 2002, helping lead ASU to a 37-21 record and a third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Pedroia set an ASU freshman record with 82 hits in his rookie campaign, capping his phenomenal year with a 10-for-20 (.500) performance in the NCAA Regional in Mesa, Ariz.
In addition to finishing fourth on the team with his .347 batting average, Pedroia was the anchor of a very solid infield. Starting at three different positions (2B/3B/SS), Pedroia made only four errors in 223 total chances (.982 FLD%). He recorded at least one hit in 46 of his 58 games and led the team with 27 multi-hit games.
He is currently in Tucson, Ariz., trying out of the Team USA National team with teammate Ryan Schroyer. The 2002 All-Pac-10 First Team selection was also named a first-team freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Florida State shortstop Stephen Drew, the brother of St. Louis Cardinal star J.D. Drew, was named Baseball America's Freshman of the year.
