ASU Sends Nine To U.S.A. Outdoor Track and Field Championships At Stanford

June 18, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2002 track and field season continues for nine Arizona State athletes, as five current Sun Devils are slated to compete in the 2002 U.S.A. Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while four freshmen will compete at the U.S.A. Junior National Outdoor Championships at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field in Palo, Alto, Calif., Friday, June 21, through Sunday, June 23.

Competing at senior nationals will be junior Tiffany Greer (women's long jump), junior Lisa Aguilera (women's 3000m steeplechase), senior Kelly MacDonald (women's 3000m steeplechase), senior Brandon Strong (men's 1500m) and senior Tony Galaviz (men's 110m hurdles).

Four ASU freshmen will compete in the Junior National Outdoor Championships including Trevell Quinley (men's long jump), Porchea Carroll (women's 100 meters), Desiree Davila (women's 1500m) and Julia Pedersen (women's shot put and discus). Greer, a six-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 champion in the long jump, looks to improve upon her NCAA runner-up outdoor finish this weekend at Stanford. Strong and Galaviz also look to build upon outstanding Pac-10 finishes in 2002, as Strong was the runner-up in the 1500m and Galaviz placed fourth in the 110m hurdles.

Two Sun Devils will compete in the women's 3000m steeplechase in All-Americans MacDonald and Aguilera. MacDonald, who wrapped her collegiate eligibility with the 2001 cross country season, placed third in the event last year at the U.S.A. Championships, after winning the inaugural Pac-10 title and notching a third-place finish at NCAAs. Aguilera followed MacDonald's lead in 2002, winning a Pac-10 title of her own in the event and going on to place sixth at the NCAA Championships. Aguilera was also the 2002 NCAA runner-up in the indoor 3000m.

Quinley, the 2002 Pac-10 runner-up in the long jump, leads ASU's group of freshman competing in the junior portion of the meet. ASU's other three women, Carroll, Davila and Pedersen, are also coming off strong freshman campaigns.

A handful of former ASU track and field stars will also be on hand for senior nationals, including 2000 Olympian Dwight Phillips (men's long jump), Marcus Brunson (men's 100m), Tony Berrian (men's 400m), Priscilla Hein (women's 1500m) and 2000 Olympian Nick Hysong (men's pole vault).

Complete results for the U.S.A. Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be available at www.usatf.org. The meet will be televised Sunday, June 23, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
