TEMPE, Ariz. - For the second straight year, Arizona State softball players Erica Beach (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Kara Brun (Glendale, Ariz.) were both named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-American District VIII First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American.
To be eligible for consideration for the team a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.20 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), must be in at or least her second year of participation at the school and must be an important squad contributor.
Beach, a senior pitcher, holds a 3.27 grade-point average in broadcasting. She is also having a career year on the field with 27 wins and a .310 batting average. Beach is also Arizona State's all-time leader in home runs (27) and RBIs (151).
Brun, a junior shortstop, carries a 3.42 grade-point average in communications. Brun is also having a career year on the diamond as well, producing a school record 51 RBIs and 10 home runs in a single season. Brun is batting .392 with 11 doubles, 31 runs scored and holds a .632 slugging percentage.
Beach and Brun will now advance to the Verizon All-American national ballot with that team being announced on June 6th.
