Adria Engel Wins Again On Wednesday

May 22, 2002

Women's tennnis player Adria Engel advanced to the quarterfinals at the NCAA Singles Championship held at Stanford Wednesday afternoon with a 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over sixth-seeded Andrea Ondrisova of Virginia Commonwealth. She will meet Erin Burdette of Stanford at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Engel is one of just two unseeded players left in the quarterfinals. Live scoring and updated brackets are available on the internet at www.gostanford.com.

Engel defeated Jennifer Radman of South Carolina 6-3, 6-2 in a first-round match that began on Monday but had to be finished on Tuesday due to rain. She then defeated Bruna Colosio of LSU 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the third-round match against Ondrisova.

Engel is a two-time All-American in singles and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals last year, the furthest any Sun Devil has gone since 1986.

"I just tried to mix it up and take her out of her game by playing smart and not making any errors," said Engel. "I knew that if I kept staying focused I could come out on top. There were a lot of long points in the tiebreaker so I basically just tried to go for my shots."
