  • TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State baseball players Ryan Schroyer and Dustin Pedroia were selected today to participate in the 2002 USA Baseball National Team Trials. Both players will vie for a spot on the USA National team that will tour the United States and Holland this summer on the Red, White and Blue Tour.

Schroyer, ASU? sophomore closer, is 4-1 on the year and leads the Pac-10 with a 2.55 ERA. He has struck out 65 batters in 29.1 innings. As a reliever, Schroyer has been nearly unstoppable with a 1.52 ERA and six saves in 29.2 innings. He was named the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after his first start of the year when he struck out 12 vs. Southern Utah in just six innings. Schroyer was a member of the 1999 Team USA Junior National Team that earned a Bronze Medal in the Junior Pan-Am Games in Caracas, Venezuela.

Pedroia, a true freshman from Woodland, Calif., has been one of the Sun Devils most valuable players on the field. Hitting at an overall .332 (67x102) clip with 13 doubles and 22 multi-hit games, Pedroia has been even better in Pac-10 play with a .385 batting average. As good as his offense has been in his rookie campaign at ASU, his defense has been that much better. Playing three different positions this year with eight starts at second base, 15 starts at third base an d28 starts at shortstop, Pedroia is the only Sun Devil to play in all 51 games this year. He has not made an error in ASU? 21 league games and has made only two errors in 189 total chances overall (.989 FLD %).

Schroyer and Pedroia will be looking to continue a recent pipeline of ASU players who have played for Team USA. Willie Bloomquist (1998), Casey Myers (2000), Jon Switzer (2000) and Mike Esposito (2001) are all recent alumni of the Team USA National Team.

As heard earlier today on the USA Baseball MLB Radio Selection Show, USA Baseball announced a list of nine (9) more collegiate players that have been invited to participate in the 2002 USA Baseball National Team Trials - to be held in Tucson, Ariz. (Hi Corbett Field) June 18-23. The USA National Team will be selected from a pool of 36 players, of which an additional eight (8) have yet to be determined.

The official 22-man Team USA roster will be determined and announced on June 24. Fans wishing to follow the progress of Schroyer and Pedroia can log on to the official website of USA Baseball at www.USABaseball.com.
