Track & Field Records Five NCAA Provisional Qualifying Efforts In Final Day of Mt. Sac Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - Led by the NCAA provisional qualifying performances of senior Candida Coulson, senior Tony Galaviz, junior Vince Mosca, the women's 4x100m relay team and the men's 4x400m relay team, Arizona State track and field completed the third and final day of competition at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., Sunday.

According to the results available, the Sun Devils compiled a total of 10 NCAA qualifying efforts at this weekend's Mt. Sac Relays, in addition to senior Brandon Strong's automatic qualifying time in the men's 1500m at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, Friday.

After recording a provisional qualifying mark and personal-best in the discus yesterday, Mosca became ASU's only double-qualifier on the weekend, matching his personal-best in the shot put with a mark of 59 feet, 0.75 inches. Mosca's effort placed fourth in the first section of the men's university/open shot put Sunday.

Coulson clocked an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the women's 400m hurdles with a season-best 58.76 to place second in the fourth heat of the university/open section. Coulson's time tied for third fastest overall among the four heats in the university/open section.

Competing for the first time outdoors this season, Galaviz placed fifth in the Olympic development section of the men's 110m hurdles with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13.89. The women's 4x100m relay team of freshman Porchea Carroll, junior Tiffany Greer, senior Joni Smith and freshman Cassandra Reed also turned in a season-best effort, placing fifth in the invitational section in 44.82. Team USA won the heat in 43.01. The Sun Devil team was 0.82 seconds off the automatic qualifying standard.

The men's 4x400m relay team of junior Lorenzo Parham, freshman Seth Amoo, senior Pete Lopez and sophomore Steve Fitch placed third in the invitational heat, but was the top collegiate team to finish the race. The Sun Devils clocked a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:05.94, just shy of their season-best time of 3:05.41 set at last weekend's Sun Angel Classic. Junior Casey Clark finished second in the university/open section of the men's high jump, clearing a season-best height of 6-9.75, while freshman Asokah Muhammad finished sixth in the men's triple jump with a season-best mark of 47-3.5 to highlight other field event action.

Greer and Carroll swept the top two places in the Olympic development heat of the women's 100m, with Pac-10 qualifying times of 11.81 and 11.95, respectively. Carroll's time was a season-best effort. Greer also placed seventh in the third heat of the university/open women's 200m in 24.21. Reed nabbed fourth place in the first heat with a time of 24.54, while senior Christie Winkle was ninth in the second heat in 25.30. Winkle also placed seventh in her heat of the university/open 100m in 12.38.

Sophomore Seneca Holmes placed fourth in her heat of the women's 400m hurdles (1:00.83) and fifth in the Olympic development heat of the women's 100m hurdles (13.90), while Smith placed fifth in the Olympic development heat of the 400m in 54.87.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Reed, Coulson, Holmes and Smith placed eighth in the invitational section in 3:39.85, just .85 seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. On the men's side, the 4x100m relay team of junior Luiz Mello, Amoo, Parham and Fitch clocked a time of 40.73 to place fourth in the invitational section.

Mello placed third in the second heat of the men's university/open 200m in a season-best 21.03, while Amoo finished fourth in the first heat in 21.17. Mello also finished third in his heat of the 100m in 10.63. Freshman Chris Morgan placed third in the second heat of the university/open men's 110m hurdles in 14.78.

Next up the Sun Devils, ASU will send its distance corps to the Oregon Invitational in Eugene, Ore., Friday, April 26, through Saturday, April 27, while the rest of the squad heads to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday, April 25, through Saturday, April 27.
