ON TAP: The ninth-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team (12-5, 3-2 Pac-10), up two spots in this week's national rankings, continues Pac-10 Conference play as they head to the Bay Area. The Sun Devils will first stop in Berkeley to take on 15th-ranked (11-6, 2-2) California on Friday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. ASU will then face third-ranked Stanford (18-1, 4-0 Pac-10) on Saturday, April 13 at 12:00 p.m. Earlier this season in Tempe, Arizona State topped Cal, 4-3 and fell 5-2 to the Cardinal.
LAST TIME OUT: The Sun Devils were victorious in their final two home duals of the regular season, defeating Washington State, 6-1 and 18th-ranked Washington, 5-2. In doubles play against the Cougars, the Sun Devils were flawless, going 3-0 for the first point. Adria Engel and Dora Krstulovic defeated Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna 8-6. Megan Yeats and Joslynn Burkett played well with an 8-3 win over Lorena Arias and Zsofi Fodor. In singles action, the Sun Devils almost swept all the singles with five wins and one loss. Burkett came from behind with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Chris Martinez, while Mhairi Brown defeated Orsolya Sallai 6-2, 7-5. Against the Huskies, the Sun Devils were unable to seal the doubles point, though Burkett and Yeats captured a 9-7 victory over UW's Erin Hoe and Ilona Kordonskaya. In singles action, ASU was nearly unstoppable, winning five out of the six matches. Lauren Colallio had a solid 7-5, 6-2 win over Andrea Coulter, while Brown also contributed a win for the Devils with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Colleen Gray. Krstulovic extended her seven match win streak with a three set win over Kordonskaya 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Burkett extended her undefeated record to 9-0 at the No. 6 slot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hoe.
HOME SWEET HOME: Over the past five seasons, Arizona State holds an impressive 60-17 (.779) overall dual record at the Whiteman Tennis Center. ASU is 23-5 (.821) dating back to last season.
NOT BAD ON THE ROAD EITHER: The Sun Devils hold an impressive 5-1 road record this year, falling only to UCLA, 4-3.
HEAD COACH SHEILA McINERNEY: Sheila McInerney enters her 18th season at the helm of the Sun Devil program after leading her team to its sixth quarterfinal NCAA appearance in 10 years. ASU has made NCAA tournaments in 16 of McInerney's 17 seasons. ASU highlights from 2001 include a 20-6 overall record (McInerney's third 20-plus win season and her highest winning percentage as a head coach (.769)), an All-American selection, an All-Conference selection, the school's first Pac-10 Conference singles champion, four players earning national rankings and three academic All-Conference honorees. ASU ended the year as the seventh best team in the country. Additionally, McInerney was selected as the head coach of the 2001 USA Tennis Collegiate team. The USA Tennis Collegiate team, an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players, is administered by the USTA and ITA.
SUN DEVILS IN THE RANKINGS: Adria Engel checks in at No. 20, Dora Krstulovic comes in at No. 29 and Mhairi Brown is No. 74. In doubles, Engel and Krstulovic are No. 24.
