TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State senior sprinter Marcus Brunson was selected the West Region Male Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the United States Track Coaches Association announced this week.
Brunson, the Pac-10 Champion in the 100m and 200m, will be presented his award at a coaches' banquet on May 29 in Eugene, Ore., one day prior to the start of the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Brunson heads a list of 14 individuals and two relay teams representing ASU at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., Wednesday, May 30 through Saturday, June 3. The Tempe, Ariz. native currently ranks second nationally in the men's 100m with a wind-aided time of 10.06 and fourth in the men's 200m with a personal-best 20.37. He is also a member of ASU's Pac-10 Champion 4x400-meter relay team that will be competing in Eugene next week.
Brunson, a four-time All-American, has competed 10 times in the 100m and 200m this season, recording first place finishes in all but one race. He was named the Pac-10's Men's Track Athlete of the Week April 23 for his winning effort and personal best in the 200m at the Mt. Sac Relays April 22.
Brunson's honor marks the second time this year an ASU athlete has been named a West Region Athlete of the Year. In the fall of 2000, Lisa Aguilera was selected the West Region Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, while Walt Drenth was named the West Region Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
