TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State track and field athlete Fasil Bizuneh and golfer Jeff Quinney were named to this year's Men's Spring At-Large Verizon Academic All-District VII second-team today, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bizuneh, a sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind., has a 3.33 GPA in chemical engineering, earning his first Academic All-District selection. ASU's top male distance runner, Bizuneh is one of three male cross country All-Americans in ASU history. This track season he has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the men's 10,000m, breaking his own school record in the event with a time of 28:58.61 at the Stanford Invitational. Bizuneh is also the ASU record-holder in the indoor 5000m (14:16.07). Last weekend at the Pac-10 Championships he placed second in the 10,000m (29:37.25) and seventh in the 5000m (14:24.81).
Quinney, a senior from Eugene, Ore., has a 3.29 GPA in finance, earning his second-straight second-team All-District selection. Quinney, the 2000 U.S. Amateur Champion and the 2001 co-Pac-10 Player of the Year, has turned in six top-10 finishes in 10 collegiate appearances this year. While at ASU, Quinney has won three tournaments including the 2001 Las Vegas Intercollegiate, the 1999 NCAA West Regional and the 1999 ASU Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational. Going into this year's NCAA Championships, Quinney is tied for ninth on the ASU all-time tournament victories list with Jim Carter (1981-84).
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or significant reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.
District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
