The Arizona State men's golf team is tied for third after the first round of the Ford U.S. Collegiate Golf Championship held at Vista Vallarta Golf Club in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
ASU shot an opening round of 4-over 292, eight strokes behind Georgia. Georgia Tech shot a 289 while TCU, Clemson and Florida also shot 292 to tie for third with the Sun Devils.
Sun Devil junior All-American Matt Jones is tied for first with a 4-under 68, while freshman Chez Reavie is tied for seventh with a 71. Brian Nosler is tied for 27th (74), while Jin Park and Ben Flam are tied for 49th (79).
The same 12 teams return to the U.S. Collegiates this year as in 2000. Georgia Tech won the team title and Oklahoma State's Edward Loar took the individual honors. Eleven of the 12 teams are ranked in the top-35 in the MasterCard Rankings, including the top-five (Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas Christian and Florida). The top individual, Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech, also is in the tournament. Arizona State's Jeff Quinney and Clemson's D.J. Trahan will not be in attendance as they are playing in The Masters.
