TEMPE, Ariz. - Members of the tenth-ranked Arizona State (17-5, 5-3) women's tennis squad wrapped up the first day at the Pac-10 singles and doubles Championships and Invitational today in Ojai, California.
Three of ASU's four women playing in the Championship draws came away with victories earlier this morning in the Round of 32. Top-seeded ASU sophomore Adria Engel, who finished the dual season ranked No. 8 nationally, defeated USC's Anita Loyola, 6-2, 6-4. ASU's Mhairi Brown bested Washington State's Ana Moura, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1, and Megan Yeats downed Arizona's Michelle Gough, 6-3, 6-3. Sun Devil senior Faye DeVera unfortunately fell to Cal's Raquel Kops-Jones, 6-3, 6-1. In the Round of 16 Thursday afternoon, Engel defeated Arizona's Laresa Marino, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to tomorrow's Quarterfinals play. However, both Mhairi Brown and Megan Yeats dropped their matches in the second round, each falling in two sets.
In Invitational play, ASU's freshman Cindy Sureephong defeated Washington's Amy Allen, 6-0, 6-1, in the Round of 32, but fell to the Huskies' Amy Allen in the second round, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Celena McCoury downed Arizona's Joanna Buczkowska via default in the first round, and ASU's Jennifer Baker fell in the Round of 32 to Washington State's Moniek van de Ven, 6-2, 6-1.
