TEMPE, Ariz. - The fourteenth-ranked Arizona State (16-5, 7-5) women's tennis squad improved its home record to 13-1 as it defeated No. 9 California (14-4, 4-3) Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center, 4-3.
ASU won the doubles point by taking two of the three needed matches. On the No. 3 court, the Devils' Adria Engel teamed up with senior Faye DeVera for an 8-5 victory over Christina Fusano and Sekita Grant. ASU sealed the team point after Cindy Sureephong and Megan Yeats defeated Cal's No. 16 duo of Jieun Jacobs and Nicole Havlicek minutes later on the No. 2 court, 8-6. In a doubles match that took nearly two hours, the Golden Bears' No. 22 tandem of Anita Kurimay and Raquel Kops-Jones rallied after being down, 5-2, to beat ASU's No. 28 Celena McCoury and Mhairi Brown on the No. 1 court, 8-6.
In singles action, the Devils got help from the No. 1, 4, and 6 courts to sneak by the Golden Bears. ASU's No. 12 Adria Engel disposed of Cal's Anita Kurimay on the No. 1 court, 7-5, 6-4, and freshman Cindy Sureephong improved to 18-2 in dual play by defeating Sekita Grant on the No. 6 court, 6-1, 6-2. After losing the first set, 4-6, senior Faye DeVera notched the other Devil win on the fourth court by stealing the last two sets of her match over Cal's Jieun Jacobs, 6-1, 6-1.
The Devils will wrap up regular season dual play next Saturday, April 21, against the No. 40 Arizona Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. (MST) at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
