Track and Field Hosts Fifth Annual Baldy Castillo Invitational

- This Week --
In the biggest home meet of the year, Arizona State track and field welcomes over 600 athletes from 14 schools across the country, as the Sun Devils host the Fifth Annual Baldy Castillo Invitational, Thursday, March 22 through Saturday, March 24 at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium. The three-day affair includes a two-day decathlon and heptathlon competition, along with a distance carnival. Thursday, the first day of heptathlon competition begins at noon, while the decathlon gets underway at 1 p.m. Friday will be a packed day of events at Sun Angel Stadium, as the men's hammer kicks off field event competition at 9 a.m., while the second day of the decathlon and heptathlon resume at noon and 1 p.m., respectively. Additional field events will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the distance carnival at 6 p.m. The meet wraps up Saturday, with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. A full schedule of events is attached. Participants --
Over 600 athletes will compete in this weekend's Baldy Castillo Invitational from Arizona State, BYU, Central Arizona College, Dartmouth, Indiana, Kansas State, Manhatten College, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, UC Santa Barbara and Washington State.

Results from the Baldy Castillo Invitational will be available on ASU's official website, www.thesundevils.com, after each day of competition is completed.

National Rankings --
The ASU women finished the indoor season ranked 20th by Trackwire.com, according to the March 7 poll. ASU's men were not ranked at all during the indoor season. For complete polls for both NCAA men and women, go to www.trackwire.com.

Recapping the NCAA Indoor Championships --
ASU sent eight individuals and the men's 1600m relay team to the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., only to have two Sun Devils come away with All-America honors in their respective events. For the second straight season, senior Kelly MacDonald captured All-America honors in the women's 5000m, finishing fifth in a season-best time of 16:20.83. Last year MacDonald set the school record in the event with a time of 16:13.41. Adrienne Judie came away with her first career All-America honors, placing fourth with personal-best mark of 66 feet, 10 inches in the women's weight-throw. Judie also improved upon her already existing school record in the event by two inches, and was 1.5 inches behind the third-place mark by Clemson's Jamine Moton. With points put on the board by MacDonald and Judie, the ASU women ended indoor nationals tied for 25th with Kansas State with nine points.

ASU Makes 2001 Outdoor Debut --
With many of ASU's top athletes still competing in the indoor season, the Sun Devils opened the outdoor season hosting the Bill Sawyer Invitational March 3. ASU came away with nine event victories, including sweeps of the men's and women's 800 and 1500 meter races. Senior Jen Bridgeman won the women's 800 in 2:12.20, while freshman Jen Hurbis clocked a winning time of 4:48.50 in the women's 1500. On the men's side, senior Bobby Raines (javelin).

Up Next --
The Sun Devils will host its second meet in two weeks as the ASU Invitational will be held Saturday, March 31 at Sun Angel Stadium. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with running events to follow at 1 p.m. ASU will also send split squads to the Stanford Invitational March 31-April 1 and the San Diego Invitational, March 31.
