Casey Earns Golf World Player Of The Week Honor

May 3, 2000

TRUMBULL, Ct. - Sun Devil junior Paul Casey has earned Golf World Player of the Week honors for his accomplishments at the Pac-10 Championships April 24-26.

Though he didn't match last year's final-round 60, Casey, a 22-year old from Surrey, England, still took home his third individual Pac-10 title in record fashion, besting Tiger Woods' previous low mark by five shots at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe. Casey cruised to a 23-under-par 265 for a 10-shot win over Oregon State's Tim Mickelson. (Woods' previous low mark of 18-under was set in 1996.) Casey's stroke average in his three wins has been 67.75. The victory was his sixth college win and moves him into a tie for third place in ASU history with Charlie Gibson.

Casey's third Pac-10 title also makes him the 12th person in NCAA history to win three conference titles, and the second in the Pac-10, joining Southern California's Sherman Finger. If he can win again next season, he will equal Justin Leonard's four Southwestern Conference victories set while at Texas from 1991-94.

In 1999, Casey won the English Amateur and was a member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team. A first-team All-American, he shot a 10-under-par 60 in the final round of the Pac-10 Championship to come from eight shots back and win the title. The 60 is the lowest round in NCAA history. In his freshman year, he was a second-team All-American.

The Pac-10 Championship marked ASU's sixth straight conference crown. The team shattered several Pac-10 scoring records. Golf World picks a men's and women's collegiate player of the week each week during the golf season. Past Players of the Week include:

March 17 D.J. Trahan, Clemson, Stacy Prammanasudh, Tulsa
March 24 Rick Barnes, Arizona, Lindsey Wright, Pepperdine
March 31 Billy Harvey, Brigham Young, Marcy Newton, North Carolina
April 7 Ryan Vermeer, Kansas, Cristina Baena, Arizona
April 14 Jason Allred, Pepperdine, Jenna Daniels, Arizona
April 21 Scott Polen, James Madison, Maria Garcia-Estrada, Duke
