TEMPE, Ariz. - Second-seeded Mississippi State defeated third seed Oregon 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Championships this morning at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
Mississippi State, ranked 34th by the ITA, won the match during singles play, eliminating the need for doubles competition. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 11-10 overall on the year.
The Ducks, ranked 53rd, end their season with an 8-15 overall record. This NCAA appearance was the team's second straight and third ever in school history.
Carole Soubis was the first player to come off the courts for Mississippi State with her 6-0, 6-2 victory over Oregon's Janice Nyland on court three. Minutes later, Claudia Oliveira finished her match next door on court four with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Ducks' Adeline Arnaud. Anca Vasiloaica then won on court six, followed by Andrea Lord on court five for the Bulldogs. Ivana Belancic wrapped up the team victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win on the second court over 73rd-ranked Monika Gieczys.
The match on the first court was suspended once MSU reached five wins. The Bulldogs' Amelie Detriviere had won the first set 7-6 (3) but was down 2-3 to Oregon's Alina Wygonowska when play was called.
Mississippi State will play the winner of the Arizona State/Army match tomorrow morning in NCAA second-round action. The match will take place Sun., May 14, at 10 a.m. (MST). General admission is $5, while students, juniors and seniors are $3.
The Regional champion will advance to the third round of the NCAAs, scheduled to begin May 18 at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.
