Arizona State sophomore lefthanded pitcher Jon Switzer is among the first 20 players invited to participate in the 2000 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held in Tucson, June 16-21. The National Team will be selected from a pool of 35-40 players at the trials. USA Baseball will announce the names of the remaining players to be invited sometime by the end of May.
Switzer leads the pitching staff with a 8-1 record and a 2.66 ERA on the mound. He has a team-high 87 strikeouts on the year and ranks in the top 5 in the Pac-10 in ERA (2.66), strikeouts (87), opposing batting average (.192), innings pitched (84.2), wins (8) and games started (13).
The lefty will be joined by three other Pac-10 players: Josh Karp, UCLA, Mark Prior, USC and Brian Sager, Stanford.
Southern California's Mike Gillespie will serve as the head coach for the team. For interested scouts, this team will be holding practice sessions at the Hi Corbett Field facilities in Tucson beginning Friday, June 16. The official team roster will be determined and announced on June 21.
