TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State men's golf team is ranked sixth in both major collegiate golf polls entering its Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational this weekend at Karsten Golf Course.
Seven top-25 teams (ASU, UNLV, Fresno State, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington and UCLA) will participate in the 28th annual event, including nine Pac-10 schools. Also, 11 individuals ranked in the top 50 will compete, including ASU's Paul Casey, who is ranked fourth in the Golfweek poll and seventh in the MasterCard Rankings. ASU's Matt Jones is ranked No. 23 according to Golfweek and No. 21 in MasterCard, while Thunderbird defending champion Jeff Quinney is No. 60 in the Golfweek and No. 34 in MasterCard. Quinney is trying to become the second champion to defend his title, as Sun Devil great Phil Mickelson did it in 1991 and 1992.
The teams tee off both days are 7 p.m., with a shotgun start on Saturday as the teams will play 36 holes. The teams will have tee times on Saturday, with the leaders scheduled for their first drives between 8-9:30 a.m. Admission is free.
ASU also plays host to the Pac-10 Championships April 24-26 at Karsten.
