TEMPE, Ariz. -- Senior Scott VonSchoff extended his individual unbeaten streak in dual action to eight races as the No. 12 Arizona State men's swimming team defeated Washington 144-118 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz., Saturday.
In their last meet of 2000, the ASU men took first-place points in nine-of-14 events to move to 3-1 overall, 1-1 against Pac-10 opponents.
VonSchoff, who had won all six of his dual-meet races coming into the competition, won the 50 yard freestyle in 20.75, and the 500 free in 4:34.91. Both finishes were season-best times for VonSchoff, who also anchored the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to wins Saturday.
In what was perhaps the most anticipated match-up of the afternoon, ASU senior Otto Hinks went down to the wire with Washington senior Francis Tam in the 100 breaststroke. Tam entered the meet having swam the fourth-fastest collegiate time this year in the event (55.16), while Hinks had claimed the 11th-best mark (55.61).
Shoulder to shoulder most of the race, Tam's body was slightly ahead of Hinks' as the two approached the finish. But in the final moment, Hinks extended to be the first to the wall, winning the race in 56.06, while Tam clocked in at 56.15.
The Huskies gained redemption in the 200 breast however, when freshman Luke Ekhoff bested Hinks, 2:04.05 to 2:05.64.
The 1000 free provided a prep reunion for ASU's Rich Jacobs and Washington's John Lyssand. Both freshman, Jacobs and Lyssand hail from the Pacific Northwest, where Jacobs attended Seattle's Highline High, while Lyssand competed for Gig Harbor High in the town of same name.
Displaying their promising collegiate talent, Jacobs and Lyssand brought the 40-lap race down to the wire with Jacobs emerging in first-place with a time of 9:29.31, while Lyssand settled for second in 9:33.92.
Getting a pair of wins for Washington, freshman Justin Adrian created nightmares for ASU junior Simon MacDonald. First, Adrian bested MacDonald by two-tenths of a second in the 100 free, 45.69 to 45.71. Then, while MacDonald finished in 50.29, Adrian swam 49.41 in the 100 butterfly to again knock MacDonald into second place.
Tired Sun Devils will benefit from a significant break for the holidays. ASU does not return to action until Jan. 5, 2001, when both the men and women hit the road to meet Tennessee.
