CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team (10-6, 0-5) dropped its fifth straight Pac-10 match after falling to Arizona State (7-6, 4-2) in three games at Gill Coliseum Sunday afternoon. Game scores were 15-7, 15-9 and 15-10.
"We played very inconsistent," said coach Jeff Mozzochi. "We're playing hard, but we just can't bring out a consistent effort. We're doing the same things we did earlier in the season, but the Pac-10 is much tougher competition."
OSU's offense struggled on the afternoon, and only one Beaver finished with double-figure kills. Angie Shirley led the team with 10 kills and hit .429 on the day, but OSU hit just .072 as a team. The Sun Devils hit .254 and had three players with double-figures. Amanda Burbridge posted a match-high 14 kills, and Michelle Mortensen hit .429 with 12 kills.
Arizona State held the defensive edge as well, outdigging the Beavers 49-39. Jessica Papell had her first career double-figure dig performance and led OSU with 10 digs, but no other OSU player had more than five digs. Jami Coughlin had a match-high 16 digs for the Sun Devils.
The Beavers return to action Friday, October 9 when they play Washington State at 7:00 p.m. in Pullman, Wash.
