ASU -- Arizona State (13-4, 0-0 Pac-10 and ranked No. 12 Baseball America, No. 10 Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 22 Collegiate Baseball) return home and will host Brigham Young (5-5, 0-0 WAC) for a three-game non-conference series at Packard Stadium this week.
THIS WEEK ON THE RADIO-- KMVP 860 AM will broadcast Arizona State's three-game series with the Cougars this week. Friday and Saturday's broadcast are live while Thursday's will be tape delayed due to ASU basketball. Trey Bender and Bob Eger will provide the play-by-play and color commentary respectively.
DID YOU KNOW? -- Arizona State has not been shutout in its last 212 games (last time shutout was a 0-9 loss to USC on April 7, 1995) ... the Devils have recorded and extra base hit in the last five games and in 15 of 17 games this season ... Bloomquist and Sitzman have combined for 55% of ASU's stolen bases this year ... the Arizona State pitching staff has a healthy 2.48 team ERA and is holding opponent batters to a .213 average at the plate ... ABOUT BRIGHAM YOUNG -- The Cougars are 5-5 and will play Mesa State College this afternoon before heading to Tempe ... they are coached by Gary Pullins (23rd season) ... BYU split a doubleheader with Mesa State on Monday, winning 7-5 while losing 3-11 ... ASU leads the all-time series with Brigham Young, 35-8 ... the last time the two teams played was in 1997 in a single game with ASU winning 9-3 ... Ryan Pond went three-for-four with two runs, four RBI, a double and two homers in BYU's victory over Mesa State yesterday ... ASU has won the last three contest with the Cougars.
Beinbrink closing in on career marks-- Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink (San Diego, Calif.) returns for his senior season and will likely become ASU's career leader in RBI, surpassing current Sun Devil Clay Westlake (1973-76). The 6-3 infielder/outfielder has 220 RBI and needs just 30 RBI to become the all-time RBI leader (Beinbrink has averaged 66 RBI over the past three years). With his 61 career doubles, he is third all-time at ASU (Westlake is the leader with 85 career doubles). Beinbrink could finish his career in the top five in seven of 10 offensive categories at Arizona State. The two-time first-team all-conference selection currently ranks eighth in the Pac-10 in career RBI as well. Beinbrink leads the squad in multiple-hit games with 10 and is second in multiple-RBI games with five. His .446 batting average is tops among the starting lineup and his 29 hits and eight doubles leads the team as well. Beinbrink is batting .520 with runners in scoring position
THE HIT MAN -- Returning junior All-American Willie Bloomquist (Port Orchard, Wash.) extended his hitting streak to 12 games over the weekend vs. New Mexico. He leads the squad in multiple-RBI games with six and is second in multiple-hit games with eight. His batting average has never dipped below .300 his entire career. He has drawn a team-leading 18 walks as well as 26 runs and 19 RBI. Bloomquist is batting .516 as a leadoff batter and is batting .500 with runners in scoring position. His batting average (.397) has dipped below .400 for the first time since his freshman year. Bloomquist is second on the team in two-out RBI with eight on the year. He has hit safely in 16 of 17 games this season. He was selected to both Baseball America's (second-team) and Collegiate Baseball's (third-team) preseason All-American teams.
WALDRIP PICKS UP FOURTH WIN ON THE MOUND -- Junior transfer Will Waldrip (Flagstaff, Ariz.) rang up win number four with an impressive outing against New Mexico on Friday night. Waldrip went 8.0 innings, allowed just four hits, one run while striking out nine. He posts a healthy 1.70 ERA, allowing only seven runs in 37 innings of work. He has 13 walks to 40 strikeouts on the year. He became the first ASU pitcher since Doug Henry in 1983 to post back-to-back complete game shutouts earlier this year. Primarily an infielder at Brigham Young, Waldrip logged only 17.2 inning pitched last year for the Cougars. After transferring to ASU, he became a full-time pitcher. Waldrip pitched 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings before giving up his first run of the season in the third inning of Saturday's game vs. Howard. He is holding opponent batters to a .175 average at the plate.
PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS -- Sophomore righthander Chad Pennington (Hamilton, Ohio), who spent the summer rehabbing his elbow had an interesting weekend, picking up a loss as the Saturday starter and a win in relief on Sunday. On Saturday, he lasted only 3.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and four runs, however only one was earned. On Sunday, in relief, he pitched 1.0 hitless inning while striking out two to pick up the 5-4 victory. He is now 3-2 on the year with a 2.10 ERA and 31 strikeouts. Pennington has logged thirty innings in six appearances and is holding opponent batters to a .261 average at the plate.
INJURY REPORT -- Freshman infielder Gonzo Grasis (Tucson, Ariz.) has had surgery on his left wrist and will most likely be out for the season.

SITZMAN STEALS THE SHOW -- Junior leftfielder Jay Sitzman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) leads the squad with 17 stolen bases in as many games. He is third on the team in hits with 17 and is batting .347 on the year. He is second on the team in runs scored with 21 and has walked 15 times this year. He has been perfect in the field with 27 putouts and has a .571 batting average with two outs. Sitzman is currently on a six-game hitting streak and has stolen five bases in the last four games.
THE NORTH AND SOUTH --This season the Pacific-10 Northern and Southern Divisions will combine and play a 24-game schedule. Nine of the conference schools will field baseball teams (Arizona State, Arizona, California, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State). Each team will play the other member schools in a three-game series either home or away. ASU will play in-state rival Arizona six times, however only one of the series will count in conference play.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK -- Pitching coach John Pawlowski joins the Arizona State coaching staff for the 1999 season and has already made an impact with the Devils young pitching staff. Through eight games, the pitching staffs ERA is 1.48 and has only allowed 14 walks while striking out 79. It has also produced three complete game shutouts. Pawlowski comes to ASU from Clemson where he coached two first round draft picks (Kris Benson and Billy Koch) and 15 total draft picks from 1993-98. A former major leaguer, he pitched in the Chicago White Sox organization from 1985-91. He also had stints with the Angels and Orioles organizations. Pawlowski, a '96 graduate from Clemson, was a three-year letterwinner for the Tiger from 1983-85 and had a 9-3 record as a junior with 17 starts. He was a sixth-round draft pick of the White Sox in 1985. In March, he will be inducted into the Upstate New York Section IV Hall of Fame.

ALL IN THE FAMILY -- Three father/son combinations have played at Arizona State including current Sun Devils Casey Myers and Brian Berger. Myers father Clint played at ASU from 1971-73 while Berger's father Bill played for the Devils from 1970-71-73. Pat Murphy now in his fifth season at Arizona State after spending seven years at Notre Dame, has left his mark on Arizona State baseball. In his first year, Murphy guided ASU to a 34-21 record and put together the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. In 1996, he directed ASU to a 35-21 record and a No. 25 final ranking by Baseball America. The 1997 season marked ASU's return to postseason play as ASU went 3-2 in the Atlantic Regiona, narrowly missing out on a trip to Omaha. The Devils finished with a 39-22 record and a No. 11 ranking by Baseball America and No. 14 ranking by Collegiate Baseball. Murphy has also started the Pitch-by-Pitch Baseball Academy which holds baseball camps and clinics year round, not only in Phoenix, but around the country as well. Last season, he was honored as Baseball America's Coach of the Year after guiding the Devils to a second-place showing at the College World Series. The '98 squad went 41-23, 18-11 (3rd) in conference. They won the Midwest Regional with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech to advance to the CWS for the first time since 1994.
The Syracuse, N.Y., native's Notre Dame teams recorded 45 or more wins in six of seven seasons and advanced to the finals of an NCAA Regional each of the last three seasons.
He also has international coaching experience, guiding the Dutch National Team to the European championship in the summer of 1987, and helping to develop baseball in Australia as a state manager in New South Wales in 1984.

Murphy is the first coach in the era of aluminum bats to have his players practice exclusively with wood bats in practice.
Murphy has never had a player declared ineligble for a season.
