Men's Tennis Sweeps Marquette

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State men's tennis team (3-3, 0-2 Pac-10) notched its third consecutive victory with a 7-0 sweep of Marquette (3-2, 0-1 Conf. USA) Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

The Sun Devils have only lost one out of the last 21 singles and doubles points in their last three dual matches, including a 7-0 sweep over UTEP on Feb. 14.

ASU has not lost a doubles point in any of its six dual matches this year.

In doubles action, sophomore Ed Carter and junior Tim Hammond recorded ASU's first win of the dual with an 8-3 defeat of their opponents at the No. 1 slot, and sophomore Alex Osterrieth and junior Gustavo Marcaccio clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Peter Dani and junior Casey Was finished with a 9-7 victory.

Hammond clinched the match for ASU with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Gil Rivera at the No. 5 singles position. No. 1 Marcaccio improved his overall record to 16-6 with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Marquette's Dan Lencina.

Osterrieth defeated Bart Cordemeyer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, and Carter battled from behind to beat Rich Harrison, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot.

Dani defeated Carlo Rossi, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4, and Was topped Christian Kawas, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 6 slot.

The Sun Devils are back in action Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, when they take on the University of San Diego at noon, at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
