Pac 10 Women's Swim Results

Feb. 26, 1998

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- After taking three of the first five events, including meet records in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, the No. 1 ranked Stanford Cardinal took an early lead Thursday after day one of competition at the 1998 Pacific-10 Women's Swimming Championships in Long Beach, Calif.

Stanford's team of Siobhan Cropper, Misty Hyman, Lindsay Gassner and Catherine Fox, set a new Pac-10 meet record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.98, besting the previous record of 1:31.48 set by Arizona last year. Shortly after, the Cardinal set another Pac-10 record as the team of Fox, Elin Austevoll, Hyman and Cropper placed first with a time of 3:38.13 in the 400 medley relay. On an individual basis, Fox and Cropper tied for the 50 freestyle title as both finished with a time of 22.69.

Distance freestylist's Trina Jackson and Laurie Kline helped No. 5 Arizona to a second place showing after day one as they took first and second in the 500 freestyle. Jackson's time of 4:39.96 was good enough for first place and a Pac-10 record, breaking Lindsay Benko's time of 4:42.25 set in 1996. Kline's time of 4:42.92 took second, as the Wildcats hold a slim advantage over defending national champion USC.

No. 4 USC is in third place as the Women of Troy trail Arizona by only a point, with two days of competition still to come. No. 9 Cal and No. 17 UCLA are in fourth and fifth place respectively. No. 21 Arizona State, Washington, Washington State and Oregon State round out the standings after day one .

California's Elli Overton joined Jackson as the only other individual to set a Pac-10 record Thursday as her time of 1:58.25 placed her first in the 200 individual medley, breaking Janel Jorgensen's record of 1:58.41 set in 1993.

Bruin distance specialist Cindy Bertelink qualified for NCAA's this March as her time of 4:45.51 in the 500 free was good enough for fourth place. UCLA took two third-place finishes as Keiko Price turned in a time of 23.03 in the 50 free and the team of Jill Jenkins, Lindsay Etter, Beth Goodwin and Price finished the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:42.77.

The championships continue Friday and Saturday with preliminary sessions from 11:00-12:30 p.m., and finals starting at 6:00 p.m. All sessions are held at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.
