Baseball Knocks Off Southern Utah, 3-2

Chad Pennington notches first career complete game.

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 14th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (34-21) defeated the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (22-24) 3-2 this evening with starting pitcher Chad Pennington going the distance for the Devils.

Pennington (5-2) picked up the first complete game of his collegiate career while striking out nine Thunderbird batters and allowing only two earned runs. He scattered five hits and walked only one.

Second baseman Willie Bloomquist led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right field and scored later in the inning with a Thunderbird error. Bloomquist finished the night going 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Rightfielder Mikel Moreno also contributed offensively for the Devils with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI. Shortstop Michael Collins also drove in a Sun Devil run with a single to center in the bottom of the second and went 2-for-3 on the evening.

For Southern Utah, starting pitcher Nick Roberts (7-6) allowed nine hits and three runs (two earned) through eight innings of work. He also struck out six batters and walked two. Offensively for the Thunderbirds, second baseman Gavin Duckworth had a 1-for-4 outing while driving in a run. Leftfielder Brian Kruse also drove in a run while going 1-for-3 and scoring one. Third baseman Justin Garrett went 1-for-3 with one run scored.

This game concluded the Sun Devils regular season schedule. They will host Fiesta de Beisbol on Tuesday, May 12 at 5:00 p.m. The series against Furman University, which was scheduled for May 15-17, has been cancelled. No makeup games have been scheduled.
