Softball's Kaylyn Castillo and Dallas Escobedo Named Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week

April 27, 2011

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA STATE senior catcher Kaylyn Castillo and her teammate, freshman pitcher Dallas Escobedo have been named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 18-24, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

In one of the most historic weekend’s in ASU softball history, Kaylyn Castillo, not only led the way offensively with a .429 average, but caught all three winning games behind the plate. The Norco, Calif., native proved especially integral on Friday night’s game versus Arizona where ASU’s rallied back from a 9-1 deficit for an unheard of come-from-behind win which was capped by a six run seventh inning and the game-winning grand slam by Castillo to cap off the first sweep of Arizona in Tucson in program history.

Escobedo pitched the Sun Devils to the three game sweep over rival Arizona, allowing only seven hits and three runs. The Phoenix, Ariz., native had 21 strikeouts with only seven walks in 15-0 innings pitched. She held the strong-hitting Wildcats to a .132 batting average over the series. Prior to this weekend, the Sun Devils had only won one game in Tucson since the construction of Hillenbrand Stadium in 1993.

This is the first Player of the Week honor for Castillo. Escobedo now has two weekly nods this season and for her career. Arizona State now has 61 Players of the Week all-time.

The Sun Devils return home to host Oregon State in a three game series beginning on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. PT.
