Short Recaps Of Head Coach Jason Watson-Era Top-25 Victories

Oct. 2, 2015 – No. 6 Arizona State def. No. 8 Stanford, 3-1
Tempe, Ariz. - The No. 6 Arizona State volleyball team continued their blistering start to the 2015 season, defeating the visiting No. 8 Stanford Cardinal (8-4, 2-2) in four sets (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Senior Macey Gardner moved ever closer to the school record for career kills, finishing with a double-double of 22 kills and 11 digs in a dominating performance. Gardner now has 1,859 career kills, 12 away from the school record of 1,871 (Christine Garner, 1992-95). Three other Sun Devils finished with double-digit kills, led by senior Whitney Follette, who had 12 kills and five blocks. Juniors Bree Bailey and Cassidy Pickrell each added 11 kills. The setter duo of Bianca Arellano (26) and Kylie Pickrell (25) combined for 51 assists. The victory snapped a 28-game losing streak against the Cardinal. ASU’s last win, on Sept. 30, 2000, was also at home and in four sets.

Sept. 24, 2015 - No 7 Arizona State def. No. 14 Arizona, 3-1
Tempe, Ariz.—The No. 7 Arizona State volleyball team opened up conference play with its 12th straight victory of the season, defeating the visiting No. 14 Arizona Wildcats (10-3, 0-1) in four sets (28-26, 12-25, 25-20, 25-21) at Wells Fargo Arena. Senior Macey Gardner led ASU with 19 kills and eight digs, while junior Cassidy Pickrell had 16 kills and 12 digs for the Sun Devils. Senior Bianca Arellano played nearly every point at setter for the Sun Devils in the third and fourth sets, finishing with 39 assists and eight digs. Arellano is now fifth in ASU history with 2,758 career assists. ASU played in front of its largest home crowd in head coach Jason Watson's tenure with 5,152 fans in attendance, and a student-section record 2,011 fans.

Sept. 19, 2015 – No. 10 Arizona State def. No. 6 Illinois, 3-2
Tempe, Ariz.—The No. 10 Arizona State volleyball team fought back after dropping the opening set to defeat the visiting No. 6 Illinois Illini in five sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-11, 15-25, 15-11) in the final match of the Sun Devil Invitational at Wells Fargo Arena. Senior Macey Gardner paced the Sun Devils with 22 kills, 15 digss, and five solo blocks. She brought her all-time kill total to 1,802, No. 2 all-time at ASU. In the third set, ASU held Illinois to a -.129 attack percentage, and recorded a game-best .435 (13K, 3E, 23TA) in that frame. Junior Cassidy Pickrell added 16 kills and 15 digs, while Whitney Follette had 10 kills on .625 attacking, along with seven blocks. The win marks the first time ASU has started a season 11-0 since the 1976 season.

Sept. 4, 2015 – No. 15 Arizona State def. No. 9 Colorado State, 3-0
Fort Collins, Colo. – The No. 15 Arizona State volleyball team took down No. 9 Colorado State in three consecutive sets at Moby Arena.  Seniors Whitney Follette and Mercedes Binns, and junior Cassidy Pickrell each tallied eight kills.  Follette and Binns combined for nine of ASU’s 18 blocks. Senior Bianca Arellano and freshman Kyie Pickrell each picked up their first double-doubles of the season.  Sophomore libero Halle Harker also added 10 digs.  The Sun Devils held CSU to .098 hitting

Nov. 26, 2014 – No. 22 Arizona State def. No. 17 UCLA, 3-2
Tempe, Ariz. – The No. 22 Arizona State volleyball team fought from behind and defeated the visiting No. 17 UCLA Bruins in five sets in Wells Fargo Arena.  Junior outside hitter Macey Gardner led the team with 20 kills and 12 digs, while junior setter Bianca Arellano added 44 assists and 17 digs, both accumulating their 19th double-double of the season.  The Sun Devils were able to counter each set UCLA won with a win of their own, and after trailing 13-10 in the final set they closed the match with a 6-1 run courtesy of the service and defensive performance of senior Shannan McCready.

Oct. 24, 2014 – No. 18 Arizona State def. No. 11 Oregon, 3-2
Eugene, Ore. – The No. 18 Arizona State volleyball team outlasted the No. 11 Oregon Ducks in five sets at Matthew Knight Arena.  Junior Mercedes Binns and sophomore Bree Bailey led ASU with nine blocks each, while junior Macey Gardner had eight with a career high six block assists.  Junior Whitney Follette added seven more.  The Sun Devils nearly tied the school record for blocks in the rally scoring era with 21 total blocks.  Gardner led the team with 24 kills, and also notched a double-double with 17 additional digs. 

Sept. 26, 2014 – No. 19 Arizona State def. No. 9 USC, 3-1
Los Angeles, Calif. – The No. 19 Arizona State volleyball team upset No. 9 USC in four sets at the Galen Center.  Junior Macey Gardner led the Sun Devils with 27 kills and also added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the year.  Junior Mercedes Binns set a career high recording 14 kills.  Junior Andi Lowrance also set a career high in the match with eight kills, and she led the Sun Devils with six block assists.  Five Sun Devils recorded double-digit digs, led by freshman Halle Harker’s 21.

Aug. 30, 2014 – No. 25 Arizona State def. No. 17 Hawaii, 3-0
Honolulu – The No. 25 Arizona State volleyball team upset No. 17 Hawaii in three consecutive sets in the second match of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.  Junior Macey Gardner led the Devils with 16 kills, 10 digs, and a .333 hitting percentage, while sophomore Kizzy Willey added nine kills, nine digs, and hit a clip of .261. 

Nov. 1, 2013 – Arizona State def. No. 23 Oregon, 3-1
Eugene, Ore. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team upset the No. 23 ranked Oregon Ducks.  Macey Gardner led the way for the Sun Devils with 24 kills and .364 attack percentage throughout the four set match.  Freshman BreElle Bailey tallied up 18 kills of her own.  Middle blockers Whitney Follette and Mercedes Binns racked up 21 kills as well as a zero attack errors between the two of them. 

Sept. 13, 2013 – Arizona State def. No. 2 Texas, 3-0
Champaign, Ill. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team dominated the defending NCAA Champions and No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns in three straight sets in the Illini Classic.  Macey Gardner led the team with 17 kills and ten digs, recording her first double-double of the season.  Freshman Kizzy Willey recorded ten kills of her own and had the lone solo block of the game for the Sun Devils.  Whitney Follette came up big for the Devils in essential situations with four service aces, four kills, and three block assists.  Setter Bianca Arellano also shined in the match recording a double-double with 32 assists, 13 digs and six kills.

Aug. 31, 2013 – Arizona State def. No. 24 Wichita State, 3-0
Orem, Utah – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team pulled off the upset with the 3-0 sweep over No. 24 Wichita State in the Utah Valley La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational.  Freshman BreElle Bailey ended the match with 16 kills, two blocks and one dig.  Macey Gardner followed close behind with 12 kills of her own, along with eight digs and two service aces.  Senior libero Stephanie Preach had a team-high 21 digs.  ASU was tested early on in the match with several errors, only winning the first set 25-22, but dominated the Shockers in the final set with scores of 25-9 and 25-16 respectively. 

Nov. 21, 2012 – Arizona State def. No. 5 Washington, 3-1
Seattle, Wash. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team upset No. 5 Washington in four sets on the road.  The win was not possible without 19 kills from macey Gardner and 46 assists from Allison Palmer.  After winning the first set by out-blocking UW, the Huskies countered the Devils to even the match at 1-1.  In the final two sets the Sun Devils held onto its momentum gained by starting the third with more kills than in the entire second frame.

Nov. 2, 2012 – Arizona State def. No. 6 USC, 3-0
Tempe, Ariz. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team swept the sixth-ranked USC in three very close sets.  Macey Gardner posted 13 kills while Erica Wilson had 10 of her own in the upset.  Stephanie Preach had 19 digs, Allison Palmer had 13 and Nora Tuioti-Mariner recorded eight kills and 11 digs of her own. 

Nov. 24, 2010 – Arizona State def. No. 2 California, 3-2
Berkeley, Calif. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team toppled the No. 2 Cal Bears in an exciting five-set match.  Malia Marquardt and Erica Wilson led the way for the Sun Devils with five and four kills apiece to lead ASU to a .289 attack percentage average.  The defense carried the weight in the first set with three blocks to go up 1-0.  The offense was unable to find their way in the second set as they hit -0.56 and let Cal tie it up 1-1.  The third set had a similar outcome for the Sun Devils and they then found themselves down 1-2.  Cal’s unforced errors in the fourth set allowed ASU to tie it up to two sets apiece, and in the final set ASU crushed a .458 attack percentage for 12 kills winning the set and the match. 

Oct. 16, 2010 – Arizona State def. No. 10 UCLA, 3-1
Tempe, Ariz. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team awed the hometown crowd as they upset the No. 10 UCLA Bruins in four sets.  Set one saw 12 tie scores and two lead changes, and went into extra points as Sarah Reaves’ 11 kills and the defense’s 35 digs brought ASU the first win.  Both defenses stepped it up in set two but the Sun Devils were still able to take off and head into the break up 2-0.  ASU out-blocked the Bruins in the third set, but nine unforced errors helped UCLA take the set 26-24.  The fourth set saw a .344 attack percentage from the Sun Devils and the match was theirs.

Oct. 15, 2010 – Arizona State def. No. 5 USC, 3-1
Tempe, Ariz. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team shocked the No. 5 USC Trojans in four sets.  Erica Wilson had .800 attack percentage with four kills in the first set while the defense shut down the Trojans with 16 digs, eight from Sarah Johnson alone, and 3.5 blocks to take a 29-27 win.  The momentum continued in the second set with Danica Mendivil’s four kills and the win.  USC seemed to figure out ASU’s blocking scheme in the third set, but Sarah Reaves six kills and .312 attack percentage and four blocks in the fourth set led the Sun Devils to victory. 

Sept. 25, 2009 – Arizona State def. No. 14 UCLA, 3-0
Tempe, Ariz. – The unranked Sun Devils swept the UCLA Bruins at home, led by Sarah Reeves’ 15 kills, while Sonja Markanovich picked up six block assists. ASU led from start to finish in the opening frame, scoring seven of the first nine points. In the second set, ASU led from wire-to-wire, taking a 10-3 advantage and extending their lead to as many as nine at 15-6. In the final frame, ASU came back from down 6-1 to clinch the win at 25-22.

Oct. 25, 2008 – Arizona State def. No. 24 Oregon State, 3-0
Corvallis, Ore. – The unranked Arizona State volleyball team swept the No. 24 Oregon State Beavers in Gill Coliseum.  Sarah Reaves had 13 kills while the Sun Devil defense slammed 14.5 blocks.  The Devils forced nine Beaver errors in the first set to make the difference, and in the second set Sara Todorovich had four kills and three block assists.
