TEMPE, Ariz. -- Lisa Aguilera led the Sun Devil track and field contingent in the second day of Arizona State's fifth-annual Baldy Castillo Invitational, winning the women's 1500m with an NCAA provisional qualifying and personal-best time of 4:20.30 (hand-timed) Saturday evening at Sun Angel Stadium.
Aguilera improved upon her previous best time of 4:20.76, a time that began the season as the second-best in ASU women's outdoor history. She remains second on the all-time list, behind Priscilla Hein's school record of 4:17.98 set in 1999.
Also earning NCAA PQ marks for ASU were Valerie Williams and Tiffany Greer, placing second and third in the women's long jump with marks of 6.21 and 6.20 meters, respectively. Candida Coulson turned in a time that met provisional qualifying standards with a second-place finish in the women's 400m (58.90), but the mark is not allowable because it was hand-timed.
ASU's other event winner on the day was Brandon Strong, winning the men's 1500m in 3:50.18. Kyle Frerichs made a strong showing in the men's decathlon, placing third overall with a personal-best 6558 points, 37 shy of second-place. In the women's heptathlon, ASU's Elizabeth Arollo finished eighth with 4332 points, her strongest event being the javelin where she placed second with a personal-best effort of 40.24 meters.
The Baldy Castillo Invitational wraps up tomorrow with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. at Sun Angel Stadium.
