Rod Allen Named Freshman All-American By Baseball America

June 19, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State University freshman baseball player Rod Allen Jr., was named a first-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America. Allen, who hit .389 with 14 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 53 RBI during his rookie campaign, became the first freshman in ASU history to earn first-team All-Pac-10 honors.

Finishing second on the team in batting average, home runs and RBI behind senior catcher Casey Myers, Allen was one of the Devils' driving forces to a third-place finish (14-10) in the Pac-10. Starting 42 games and playing in 51, Allen maintained a slugging percentage of .578 and had an on-base percentage of .441. Allen started his ASU career with a bang, recording a hit in 17 consecutive games, going 27-for-60 during that streak. Allen was listed as the designated hitter on Baseball America's annual freshman All-American team, with his .389 average ranking third highest of all first-teamers. Allen is currently spending the summer playing left field with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the Alaskan Summer League.

Allen was also named a first-team freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, joining six other freshman Devils that earned honors on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team. Freshman first baseman/designated hitter Jeremy West was a first-team selection, while pitchers Ryan Schroyer, Mike Esposito and Aaron Klusman, infielder Steve Garrabrants and outfielder Nick Walsh were all named honorable mention.
