ASU Head Coach Todd Graham
Opening Statement
We pulled our ones out a little bit early, but we wanted to be smart. Lots of good things. Lots of positive on both sides of the football. The biggest thing is sticking to what we were doing. We were rolling. We should’ve went up 21-0. Sacks and negative plays. We were getting the ball out quick and following our plan, and we have to stick to that. We have to protect that. The team did a good job. Everybody had good things they were doing. The second half was fade throws and throwing over the top. New Mexico State made an unbelievable catch there in the first half where they scored on the fade back in the back of the end zone. I thought we did some things that we wanted to. We got TFLs (tackles-for-loss) and sacks on defense, but we gave up too many. We had too many negative plays on offense. We had some explosive plays and did some good things, but the bottom line is that you go out and you’re 1-0. We’ve done a great job at defending this field. Now we have to come back and go to work and get ready for San Diego State.
On NMSU’s offense
Almost 90 plays. There was a combination of that. One being not running the football. We have to be able to run the football. They were doing some stunting and some things like that. We just weren’t very effective at running the football. We threw for a lot of yards, but when you pass it like that and you aren’t able to effectively run the ball, you’re going to play more plays than the opponent. It was opposite: they played 88 plays and we played 70 on offense. Our defense cannot play 88 plays. On the other side, NMSU was completing short, controlled passes, going empty and all that. The quarterback did a good job. He’s a good operator. They did some good things. We have a lot of things to improve upon, but the big thing is we had the game in hand. I probably pulled the guys out a little bit early and then we gave up a couple scores there late. Then we got real conservative on offense maybe a little bit early. Bottom line is that I thought the game was in hand and I wanted to protect our guys.
On rotating the defense
It’s no different than what we were doing in the past. When we got guys that we can rotate, we’re going to rotate. Until they perform in practice at the level they need to do, Tashon Smallwood and Jo Jo Wicker are going to play a lot of plays. Koron Crump can play a lot of plays. Our linebackers have always played pretty much every play. We didn’t play any nickel. We didn’t feel like it was something we needed to do. We need to get some of those young guys to practice a little better and maybe we can rotate them in. We’ll get there. We’re going to play our guys. Coach Bennett and their staff know their guys and know how they want to rotate them in there. I want to let them do that.
On the offense
I didn’t think we did a very good job but we wanted to stay out of drop back situations. We didn’t feel like there was a reason for us to get into those. You get bated in there because…we were rolling right along. Those first nine plays were smooth. We come back and score 14. We come back and we were right down there, going to make it 21 and we take a sack on a double-cut. You can’t be tempted by that. That was my fault. We shouldn’t have done that. The big thing is sticking to our…I thought we did a lot of good things. We fast tempo-ed them and threw the seam route to Jalen (Harvey) was impressive. We got a lot of weapons and a lot of potential. The biggest thing that was difficult and that we have to make sure we get going is the run game. They were doing a lot of stunning up front that was causing us issues. We needed to just perimeter run and perimeter pass. To me, when you’re throwing those spots out there, those spot screens and that stuff, that stuff is a run play to me. It’s just as effective. They have to loosen them up that way. Hands off to their coaches, they did a good job. I think, schematically, they caused us some problems in the run game. We have to get to work because you have to be able to run the ball more effectively because that was the issue.
On Humphrey’s 60-yard touchdown
Billy (Napier) made a great call on that. In a lot of second and longs, we had a timeout there, and he said, ‘Hey coach, I want to take a shot here. I feel like we can beat them here.’ And I was going, ‘Golly, we’ve been going second and long in our last five series.’ So I said, ‘I’ll trust your judgment’, and boy, was it a heck of a call. That was great home run post and great throw.
On overall play by his team
That’s the good thing. We have a lot of talented guys. Was very proud of the guys. I thought the guys played disciplined. We didn’t have a lot of penalties. We probably had a couple of them, I guess one. We just went cold there in the second quarter because of some negative things. But, you know what, you’re 1-0 and you go to the next one. I’ll take them every time.
On making halftime adjustments
People talk about halftime adjustments and the wait for halftime…you can forget it. I don’t like it. I like the 15-minute halftime. The only thing I’m doing differently is that I’m not holding them on the field. We’re saving a minute or two by going straight to our locker room. Our locker room is actually closer and we can get in there pretty quick. The halftime seemed about the same to me because we’re close to the field, and then we get into the locker room quicker, and then I’m not holding them. I’m usually holding them and we talk for sixty seconds before they go in because we cross the other team or they want me to hold them in other places. At other places, that might be a factor if it takes you longer to get to the locker room. The key is making the adjustments in between series and I just don’t like a long time at halftime.
On Joey Bryant and Kobe Williams’ first games
Both those guys got picks in their first game. They’re learning. They were in great position, even when they gave up some passes. The first touchdown with the fade over Cody (French), my gosh, that was like an Odell Beckham catch. When we got him cut off, we were actually over the top of him and we’re competing for the ball. And a couple of those ones down the sideline, Joey (Bryant) just has to look back for. That’s just learning. I’m going to tell you, I was impressed with both of those guys. I think we’re much improved at that corner position. I was proud of our safeties. I thought our safeties did some good things. They were very consistent and there weren’t many free runners running around. I think we had six or so sacks and eight TFLs, so we did some of those things. We got a couple of turnovers. We’d like to have three turnovers and about 15 when it comes to sacks and negative plays with our defense, so there are a lot of positive things with that, too.
ASU Redshirt Junior Quarterback Manny Wilkins
On getting sacked seven times
“I just got to do a better job with the protections. Sliding to certain spots where I know I’ll be protected. You know just protect my body when I’m on the field. They did a really good job, I just got to tweak some things up on my end.”
On the assessment of tonight’s performance
“I got to be better. I missed a couple protection things, I needed to make sure we are solid on and that begins with me. We are 1-0. That’s always the goal to go out there and get a win. We have a lot of things to clean up. We did a lot of good things. Very impressed with what the defense did. We had a lot of guys making some plays. It was good to see them make some plays and get some confidence rolling. I think it was a good game. That was a good opponent that we faced. [We’re] 1-0.”
On the feeling of how the game flowed throughout
“My goal was to manage the game as best as I could. Take what the defense gave us. When we needed to throw bubbles, when there pulling people into the box, then throw the bubble. When they’re outside on the bubbles, give the ball to these backs and let them go make something happen. I feel like I could have thrown a few more completions just on little things. Did my job throwing the football, that’s the key to the game. We were plus three on takeaways and that’s the goal, to have no turnovers on offense and get to the ball on defense.”
On Coach Graham talking more in the offensive huddle
“He's always around. He's two places at one time. But yeah, it was good to have him come over. Obviously he's the head coach and he knows what he's doing, but he knows every situation like the back of his hand. So to have him there in certain situations where he comes over and talks to you and says 'Hey, if this is the situation we're in, we're up by this many points, let's be smart.' It's good to have that running through your head when you go on the field. He helps you manage the game and it was good to have him there."
ASU Senior Defensive Lineman Tashon Smallwood
On his performance tonight
“I mean we did some good things, but it wasn’t good enough. I mean we started off coming out and playing hard, but we have to finish. We’re not interested in just winning games we are trying to win championships. We got to do everything to a ‘T.’ The good thing is this is just the first night and we got the W, but we still got a lot of work to do. We are not where we want to be. We are not where we need to be, but we still have room for growth."
On whether he came off the field during the course of the game
“No. I was on the field until the end of the game.”
On if he knew it was going to be the same 11 throughout the entire game
“That is what we expect. All of us. The starting 11 is expected to play all the snaps. It was really no surprise.”
On if the starting defensive line expected to play most of the game
“ We expect that. (The coach) didn't tell us 'you guys are not coming out' at the beginning of the game but that's just something we expect. The coaches want the best players on the field.”
ASU Redshirt Sophomore Wide Receiver John Humphrey
On how it felt to be out on the field for the first time in two years
“It’s a blessing. It has been a long wait and stepping out on the field is just a wonderful feeling.”
ASU Senior Running Back Kalen Ballage
On the overall performance of the team
“I was excited. We had a lot of big plays. There were a lot of new moving parts to our offense and our defense, special teams, players, schemes offensively and defensively. I think it was exciting to see those guys go out there and make plays and I'm excited to see what comes next."
On his six or seven catches right at the beginning of the game
“I think to be an elite football player you always want the ball in your hands. I have that mindset, but it's not just about me, it's about the football team. Any chance that I have the ball I try to take care of it to my best ability and run hard and I appreciate the coaches putting so much trust in me and allowing me to carry and run."
New Mexico State Head Coach Doug Martin
On ASU’s specialties
“Arizona State is a really talented offensive football team. Their running backs and receivers are elite players and [Manny Wilkins] is on his way to becoming elite. I thought that was the best we played against a better conference team since I have been coaching here. We competed really hard on that side. We have to create more turnovers and we have to cut down on [our opponent’s] explosive plays. I think the biggest positive we have is belief. Our guys believe they can win and they have the confidence to play hard until the end. Arizona State is really good upfront. The down four guys are going to cause a lot of people some problems, but we were physically outmatched there a bit.”
On their area to improve on
“The kicking game. The kick-off return that got out on us was a killer. I also think that some penalties went against us but it is what it is. We fought hard and made a lot of plays.”
On a slow offensive start
“I think we were having troubles protecting Tyler Rogers there early. The first interception was a misread on him as well as the second. We did the same thing as ASU in terms of getting started in the second half. Larry Rose III dropped a screen pass that he was going to gain at least 15 yards and those are things you cannot do if you are playing a team like this.”
On first game jitters
“All of our guys have really played so there’s really no excuse there. I think we were just playing a really good football team and your mistakes are going to be magnified when playing a good team like Arizona State.”
On utilizing the roster
“We are trying to play more aggressively and use the athletes that we have. We are blessed with a linebacker now which we didn’t have last year so we have some guys who can really pressure the passer. Last year we couldn’t get to the quarterback to save our lives; whether we blitzed or not we just couldn’t get there.”
On Jaleel Scott
“The offense are the positions we have tremendous depth and we have different style of receivers. We have bigger guys that are on the outside and smaller guys on the inside. AJ Clark played a great game in the slot today, too. We have guys who can hurt you. If someone chose to double Jaleel, we have other guys who can hurt you which is a blessing. His one handed touchdown catch in the second was an NFL play that should be on some highlights. He made two or three that were unbelievable.”
NMSU Redshirt Senior Wide Receiver Jaleel Scott
On who he played for tonight
“I played for my team. I wanted to win today, so I’m not satisfied but I know next week my preparation will be two times harder.”
On his role with the team
“I felt like I was going to have a bigger role this year due to the fact that I came in and worked hard day in and day out and I took every rep seriously. How hard you prepare is going to show. The coach is going to see that.”
On his phone blowing up after his first half TD
“I did see my phone but I didn’t get back to the people that tagged me in stuff and texted me. I’m a shy person so when I saw my phone I was like ‘wow.’ It felt surreal.”
Regarding the touchdown play
“I didn’t see the ball. The ball went into the light. Something just told me to put one hand up and I think that’s a blessing for that to happen.”
On his confidence going forward
“The play gave me confidence. It gives me that drive that this is not enough; I’m hungry, I want more. For the next team we play, they’re going to see this on film so my preparation will be ten times harder.”
On cleaning up the offense
“You’ve got to execute. Small plays that we didn’t execute killed us. To win a game you need to be able to execute. We struggled in that. We were trying to feel our way into the game instead of attacking. As we started going, we started rolling, and we made some setback plays so I’m happy.”
NMSU Senior Linebacker Dalton Herrington
On the positive takeaways of the game
“The game itself… they came out and hit us with a punch. It got a little rough from the get-go but we bounced back really well. On the sack note, I think our defensive line played really well. If we can keep that up, I feel like it will be a big positive for us. It’s something we haven’t had in the past. Our pressures worked really well. If that’s something we can keep up moving forward, it will be really good for us. They were physical but by the second series, we were kind of in the game.”
On the seven sacks tonight
“That’s huge. Now it’s just a matter of keeping it up. This game comes down to a couple plays. A few passing plays hurt us, the pick six hurt us. Take those three plays that really hurt us away and that’s the game. Down the stretch it was us chasing points, it was us taking the lead.”
On staying calm after going down 14
“I thought that was big too. They came out and threw a good punch. I don’t know if we weren’t necessarily ready. They worked the perimeter on us, got [Kalen Ballage] and [N’Keal Harry] the ball. Those two guys are really good players. They got them the ball early and they made plays. After that we bounced back really well. We had a great second quarter and a great fourth quarter. We just need to be a little more consistent. Then take away the big plays and we’re right there.”
