ASU: Tough physical player, who will contend for a starting position … moved to right guard after playing right tackle last year. 1998: Graded out at 90 percent in 20 plays in the ASU’s 34-15 defeat of North Texas … received an 88 percent grading with one assignment error at USC … started at right tackle in the Sun Devils’ 44-38 overtime win over Stanford … also started in ASU’s 38-28 win at Washington State … received a 91 percent grading with only two assignment errors … missed his first game of the season, the Sun Devils’ 55-22 rout of California, with a shoulder injury … in limited action at Arizona, graded out at 88 percent with only two assignment errors … played in nine games and started two at right tackle.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 1995 graduate of Chino High School, Chino, Calif.… lettered three times in football and four times in track and field… captained the football team in 1994 and 1995 and the track and field team in 1993, 1994 and 1995… named all-district in football in 1992 and 1993… named all-district and all-Baseline League in football in 1994… also named Offensive Lineman-of-the-Year in San Bernardino… earned all-state honorable mention accolades… participated in the state track and field meet in 1994 in the shot put and the discus… set the Chino High record for the shot put (181’ 6”)… coached in football by John Munger and in track and field by Dave Frikel.

PERSONAL: Major is justice studies… parents are Herbert (machinist) and Wendy (secretary) Schmidt of Ontario, Calif.… born August 16, 1976 in Stuttgart, Germany… grandfather was a national high jumper and ramp skiier… enjoys all sports, hunting and fishing… most exciting experience in sports was not losing to rival Don Lugo High School in football for three seasons… full name is Thomas Schmidt.
