Shelly Eaton begins her fourth season as an assistant coach with the Sun Devils. Relying on her areas of expertise, Eaton will again choreograph ASU's routines on balance beam and floor exercise.
Last year, ASU set its second consecutive school record on floor exercise, scoring 49.825 versus Arizona on 2/27/04. In 2003 the Sun Devils established another school mark, this time a 49.725 vs. Kentucky. Eaton tutored a national champion in 2004, as sophomore Ashley Kelly scored a 9.9 in winning the balance beam title. In all, ASU scored 10.0's three times on floor (Kelly, Kari Muth and Maggie Germaine) and three times on beam (Kelly twice and Muth) in 2004. In the past two years, ASU has scored five 10.0's on beam and five on floor.
In addition to her position at ASU, Eaton is also currently the co-owner and director of SportsTech International/Desert Devil Gymnastics in Mesa, Ariz. As a club-level coach, Eaton mentored more than 75 state, regional and national champions on floor exercise and beam at her SportsTech/Desert Devil facilities, of which there are now five.
Prior to her coaching days, Eaton was one of the nation's top elite gymnasts. A member of the U.S. National Gymnastics Team from 1985-1989 (then Shelly Schaerrer), Eaton went on to earn shares of two NCAA Championship team titles with the University of Utah from 1989-1992.
A seven-time All-American, including a runner-up finish in the all-around at the 1990 NCAA Championships, Eaton took home multiple individual awards while at Utah, including the 1989 Coaches' Award (given to the most improved athlete), 1990 Most Valuable Player Award, 1992 Diane Ellingson Award (given to the most inspirational athlete) and the 1990 Utah Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year.
In 2000, she was named one of the top-25 female athletes in the history of Utah athletics.
In addition to her coaching experience, Eaton is also a certified level 10 and collegiate level judge.
A native of Orem, Utah, Eaton resides in Fountain Hills with her husband Geoff Eaton and their two sons, Jett (5) and Jagger (3).
