Player Bio: Jeff Pentland



Jeff Pentland played three years for the Sun Devils as a pitcher and later went on to play in the minor leagues as a first baseman, outfielder, pitcher and catcher… pitched in 54 games as a Sun Devil, starting 44 and maintaining a 32-12 career record… his career 2.25 ERA still ranks in the top 10 in ASU career baseball history… was 14-5 with a 2.05 ERA and 12 complete games in 1967, helping lead ASU to its second NCAA College World Series Championship… he received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from ASU… went on to coach from 1975-1982 at UC Riverside under former Sun Devil Jack Smitheran… returned to ASU as an assistant coach under Jim Brock from 1983-1992, tutoring future major leaguers Barry Bonds, Mike Kelly, Oddibe McDowell and Fernando Vina… joined the minor league coaching staff in the Florida Marlins organization in 1993, eventually landing as the major league hitting coach during the second half of the 1996 season… served as the New York Mets minor league hitting instructor in 1997 before joining the Chicago Cubs organization in 1997… has been the Cubs hitting instructor since July 14, 1997… during his time with the Cubs, Pentland has served as the hitting coach for Sammy Sosa, Fred McGriff, Mark Grace and Ryne Sandberg.
