WHAT TO KNOW: Has an arsenal of off-speed pitches that keep hitters off balance... had a good rookie season with the Sun Devils in 2003 when he went 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA... will add depth to the bullpen in 2004.
2003 (Junior): Went 1-0 with one save and a 1.83 ERA during his first year as a Sun Devil... appeared in 16 games, all out of the bullpen, and recorded nine strikeouts... earned first save with three innings of shutout relief against Central Connecticut State in the Tempe Regional... also contributed 1.1 shutout innings against Cal State Fullerton in the Super Regionals... picked up first career win vs. Notre Dame (2/23).
El Paso CC (2001-2002): Played two years El Paso Community College under head coach Ken Jacome... as a freshman was 7-5 with one save and a 3.38 ERA... in his final six starts he was 5-0 with a 1.84 ERA with four complete games and three shutouts... led the team in games pitched (15), innings (85.1), strikeouts (85) and shutouts... as a senior he was 3-4 with one save and a 2.72 ERA in 49.2 innings pitched... for his EPCC career he was 10-9 with two saves, nine complete games, 127 strikeouts and a 3.13 ERA... named to the Texas/New Mexico JC All-Star team... chosen for NJCAA USA Team... set the EPCC career record for lowest ERA.
High School: A 2000 graduate of Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas... earned three varsity letters in baseball and one in swimming... coached in baseball by Chris Forbes... played with the Phoenix Firebirds in 2001 and the Albuquerque Cubs in 2000... was a World Series pickup for the Firebirds... was a combined 21-1 in his high school career on the mound... named all-state pitcher and all-city second baseman... co-league MVP as a senior... El Paso Times All-City first-team pitcher and outfielder.
Personal: Pursing a interdisciplinary studies degree at Arizona State... full name is Javier Lopez... parents are Benito and Juanita Lopez of El Paso... has two sisters; Claudia Martinez (29) and Edna Williams (24)... his cousin, Cesar Romero played baseball at Fort Hays State and plays for the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos of the Mexican Professional League... enjoys swimming, fishing and playing chess... also recruited by LSU, Texas and Texas Tech... lists his most exciting experience in sports as signing to play baseball at Arizona State... born Aug. 7, 1982 in El Paso, Texas.
