Player Bio: George Yarno



A fresh face on the Arizona State coaching staff is George Yarno, who begins his first season under Bruce Snyder as an assistant coach for the offensive line. Yarno Brings a wealth of experience to the Sun Devil program, both as a long-time assistant coach in the collegiate ranks and as a 13-year performer in the NFL and USFL.

Yarno inherits one of the Pac-10's most accomplished groups of linemen, which includes 1999 all-conference honorees Victor Leyva and Scott Peters.

Prior to his appointment in Tempe, Yarno served as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at the University of Houston from February, 1998 though January, 2000. Houston posted a 7-4 record last year. His duties included coaching the Cougar offensive linemen and long snappers, supervising the strength and conditioning program and overseeing the team's academic accountability program. He also recruited in Texas, the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada.

From 1995 to 1998, Yarno was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at the University of Idaho. There he was in charge of the offensive game plan, practice plan, game-day adjustment, the playbook and all scouting reports. In addition, he supervised the Vandals' strength and conditioning program and recruited in Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Yarno also has experience in the Pac-10 Conference, having served as offensive line and special teams coach at Washington State University from 1991 through 1995. While in Pullman he oversaw the development of current NFL offensive linemen Robbie Tobeck and Scott Sanderson, among others. Yarno was also responsible for academic supervision from a football standpoint, assisted with the off-season conditioning program and recruited Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana.

The Spokane, Wash., native was a four-year letterwinner at Washington State from 1975 through 1978 before playing professionally for 13 years, including stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Houston Oilers, Green Bay Packers and Denver Gold of the USFL. Yarno graduated from Joel E. Ferris High School in Spokane before earning his degree in criminal justice from WSU.

Yarno and his wife Cindy have three children, Josh (20), Adrianne (19) and George (16).
