Player Bio: Cornell Jackson



Cornell Jackson begins his fourth season on the Sun Devil coaching staff as running backs coach.

He will coach a talented group of runners, including J.R. Redmond, Davaren Hightower, Gerald Green, Kyran Jones, J.R. Peroulis, Darrel Turner and Jake Each and newcomer Delvon Flowers.

In 1998, Jackson tutored a potent backfield in first-team all-Pacific-10 Conference selection Redmond and honorable mention flyback Jeff Paulk, who was a third-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons. Redmond also earned second-team all-America accolades by the Associated Press as an all-purpsoe runner.

In 1997, J.R. Redmond earned first-team all-Pac-10 accolades as a return specialist and Michael Martin was honorable mention as well as Sun Bowl MVP. Redmond will be a Heisman Trophy candidate in 1999. ASU led the Pac-10 in rushing in 1997, averaging 193.8 yards per outing.

In 1996, Jackson coached all-America and all-Pacific-10 Conference tailback Terry Battle, who declared for the NFL draft.

Jackson, 38, spent the 1995 season as the outside linebackers coach at the University of New Mexico. Jackson was also responsible for recruiting San Diego, Orange County and the southern California junior colleges.

Prior to the year he spent at New Mexico, Jackson was the outside linebackers coach from 1992-94 at the University of the Pacific. Jackson also held the same position at Utah State University from 1990-1991.

Jackson has followed quarterback coach John Pettas from Pacific. Jackson and Pettas coached together during the 1994 football campaign.

Jackson spent the summer of 1993 with the Seattle Seahawks as linebackers coach in their minority coaching development program.

Jackson began his coaching career with a one-year stint as defensive backs coach with the Semi-Pro Wichita Wranglers in 1986.

In 1987, Jackson was the running backs coach at Butler CC before moving on to Central Missouri State University as the defensive ends coach from 1988-89.

The 1986 graduate of Sterling (Kan.) College, Jackson was a two-time all-Conference defensive back in 1984-85. Before playing at Sterling, Jackson played for Hinds Junior College.

A graduate of Clinton (Miss.) High School, Jackson earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Sterling College. He is married to Lorri Raser Jackson.
