Bruce McGehee enters his seventh year as an assistant coach at ASU, working heavily with the Sun Devil bar workers, while also filling the ever present need for a spotter.
Last year, ASU set an uneven bars school record of 49.600 in a home victory over Eastern Michigan (3/5/04). It marked the second straight season in which the Sun Devils established a school mark on bars (49.500 vs. Kentucky in 2003). In 2003, then-freshman Ashley Kelly recorded a perfect 10.0 on bars under McGehee's tutelage. Laura Moon recorded a 10.0 in 2001 as well.
Prior to arriving in Tempe, McGehee had already accumulated 11 years of collegiate coaching experience, including five years at the University of Washington and five years at the University of California-Berkeley.
While at Washington, McGehee's duties included instructing and spotting gymnasts whose skills ranged from beginner to elite.
With McGehee as its first assistant at Berkeley, The Golden Bears advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in their history in 1992 and finished eighth.
McGehee has continually coached with the Junior Olympic age group level since 1978. Since 1998, he has also coached the Chandler, Ariz., based Desert Lights Gymnastics Club. There, he has coached numerous state and regional champions, as well as two elite national team members for the 2001-02 season.
McGehee has been a professional member of USA Gymnastics since 1978, as well as a member of the Elite U.S.A. Coaches Association.
A native of Seattle, Wash., McGehee is currently pursuing a design degree at Phoenix College.
