Phelan Wright And Nichole Thompson Earn All-American Honors

May 23, 2002

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- Arizona State softball players Phelan Wright and Nichole Thompson have been named to the 2002 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-American Teams. Wright claimed first-team honors, while Thompson earned third-team acclaim. All three All-American teams were selected by NFCA member Division I coaching representatives.

Wright, a sophomore third baseman from Los Alamitos, California, earned first-team accolades at the at-large position for third basemen. The honor caps an award filled season for Wright, who has already garnered first-team all-region and first-team All-Pac-10 honors. She leads the team in batting average (.420), hits (73) and doubles (16).

Thompson, a senior first baseman/outfielder from Irvine, California, earned third-team recognition at the at-large position for utility. Thompson was a second-team all-region and Pac-10 choice, while hitting a team-second best .376. She is second all-time in Arizona State history with 253 hits and sixth all-time in career batting average at .339.

This is the first All-American honor for Wright and Thompson, and the first for Arizona State since the 2000 season. The two honors also give the Sun Devils 16 in the programs history.
